Buying cookware can sometimes be confusing. Sometimes you end up with pots and pans that you seldom or never use at all. I had several which I gave away because they are just crowding the storage. Cookware comes in various size, shape and material. This variety is meant to cater to the different needs, situation and concern of every household. There it is…the cookware that you will use should answer your need and your circumstance. So, before you open your wallet to get that pot or pan that you fancy, it would be wise to evaluate what, when, why and how you cook. Start with what you usually cook. Do you like to prepare fried foods or salads or sautéed vegetables or soups or just about anything and everything? Do you like a lot of variation in your dishes? You should have a cookware piece that suits each dish that you usually prepare. Do you cook a lot of acidic foods? Then, you should stay away from materials that tend to react with acids like aluminum or cast iron, and opt instead for stainless steel or glass. Next, when do you cook? For your family’s meals only? Do you tend to eat out a lot? Or do you also like to have friends and relatives over on weekends and holidays. Your kitchen resources should be able to address this. You should also determine why you cook. Is it because you have to, because you have to eat and you have a family to feed? Or do you love and enjoy cooking. If you fall under the first category, then, you won’t be too concerned whether you’re using this or that piece for this or that dish. On the other hand, if you’re like my brother, who enjoy preparing food and have some level of expertise, you take cooking seriously because it makes you happy. You will want every dish to go into the right piece of cookware, you will want anything you need to be available and you will also tend to invest on your cookware. Someone who loves cooking will collect beautiful kitchenware, just like other folks who loves cars, collect cars. Furthermore, how do you cook? Do you prepare several dishes in smaller quantities or just a few in bigger quantities? How much food do you usually prepare? For how many persons? This will determine the capacity of the cookware pieces you choose. If you usually have friends over, then you should address this need accordingly by having bigger pieces available. Also, how do you want your dish to cook? Do you want it to be done evenly? Not all cookware materials deliver this. Once you have identified what you need, there are other factors you should consider like the time you have available for cleaning. Would you prefer pots and pans that don’t get messy and are easy to clean? Would you rather have light pieces which are easy to handle? Are you concerned about safety and health risks? This is important because an easy to clean pan may pose safety issues for you. You will have to determine which is more important for you. You may need to make a lot of weighing the pros and cons After you have done your evaluation, it is best to do some research about the different cookware types based on usage and material, and their characteristics. See to it that all your questions and doubts are answered, that way the next time you pay for a cookware piece you can be sure that you will actually use it and not regret spending for it.
