Without the best gutter guard installed on your home water is an enemy. Presuming your roofing is not leaking you want to make sure that all the rain water that runs down the roof does not have a chance at getting into your windows, siding, and basement . Ideally if you have a large overhang of about two feet and the ground around your foundation is sloped away from the foundation and have a bed of decorative rocks all around your home, you really don't need gutters. The rain water will simply run off the roofing and fall to the rocks below. Since you have a large overhang, it's unlikely that the rain water will be blown back to your siding and windows. The rocks won't erode like would happen with grass or mulch but instead serve to distribute the rain water. And since the ground around the foundation is sloped away from the foundation, the water will flow away from the foundation instead of towards it. If you're designing a new home, this is and ideal design. Unfortunately not everyone is this lucky. An over hang of a foot at most is what you generally find in most homes meaning that water falling from the roof edge can easily be blown back to the windows and siding. Similarly its unlikely that you'll find a home with a bed of decorative rocks around its perimeter with the ground sloped away from the foundation. Without rocks around the perimeter, ground sloped away from the foundation, and a large overhang, you'll need gutters to collect the rain water from the roof. If you have no trees around your home, you simply need to make sure your gutter installation is a quality one with effective sealing of joints at inside and outside corners and end caps. You'll also want to be certain that downspouts leading water away from the foundation are clear and open. One homeowner complained of water leaking into his basement. The problem was the the leader was too long. To compensate the homeowner installed a goose neck on the bottom of the leader. Instead of simply having an elbow leading into a leader on the ground, he had a flexible pipe that formed a U and then extended to drain away from the foundation. The water simply pooled in the flexible pipe and overflowed next to the foundation. The answer was to remove a few inches from the bottom of the leader and install and elbow with a few feet of leader. If only all wet basement problems were this easy to solve. If, on the other hand you have lots of tree debris you will need to keep your gutters clean and that could be a lot of work on your part. I've seen situations where by the time we finished cleaning the gutters enough debris had fallen to clog the downspout in a rain storm that happened before we left the property. Yes, in tree debris conditions you will need some help in the form of leaf guards. Here are a few tips to keep from choosing a gutter protector that will cause more aggravation. leaf guards. The first tip is to stay away from all kinds of screens no matter what their claims are. There are cheap ones and expensive ones made of surgical steel mesh. Don't get me wrong, the expensive ones work great with coffee grinds but tree leaves and blossoms are not like coffee grinds. What happens is that they accumulate on top of the screens and clog it. leaf guard. Google "Niagara rain gutter cover leaf guards and gutter guards" and you'll see the basic design. Debris washes from the roof onto the gutter protector and follows the water into the gutter where it clogs the downspouts. There are dozens of designs based on this basic single fin. Some of these leaf guards even have troughs which also clog with debris. To find the best gutter protector the real tip is to locate a gutter protector that significantly cuts down on both the quantity and size of debris that can pass it and get into the gutter. A gutter guard with a louvered front face would be the answer. In fact there are three of the best leaf guards that meet this criteria. One has a single row of louvers and works great for medium debris conditions. However, it is not recommended for heavy debris conditions. To see what it looks like just google "Carefree Vinyl Gutter covers". An improvement over this would contain two rows of louvers to collect the rain water. Google "Waterloov gutter guards" you'll see an example of a product with two rows of louvers which has proven over the course of twenty-two years to be the best gutter protector design. With this best leaf guard, water is a friend instead of an enemy to your home. Richard Kuhns B.S.Ch.E., engineer and inventor.
