The importance of a strong grip for wrestlers can not be understated. If a wrestler cannot control their opponent because they have a weak grip, they really need to get to work on improving that weakness. The off season is the time to really focus on getting stronger, and then you need to back off some during competition. Exercising your grip strength at least two times a week would be enough to make a good improvement. One of the more important tools to work with is a thicker diameter bar. If you do not have one you can improvise by wrapping a towel around yours and taping it in place or buy some of that foam tube insulation that is used for pipes. You can get it at any big box hardware outlet. A good reason to workout with a fatter bar is because your opponents’ arms, wrists and legs are larger and you need to train your grip for this. Using the larger bar will bring your thumb into play more naturally and give it a good workout because it is better able to squeeze into the bar. You can use the thicker bars to do the usual curls, bench press, farmer walks or any other exercise you might think up. Even try it with a pull-up bar. Wrap a towel around the bar and do pull-ups or just do dead hangs till you can not hang any more. One thing most people do not think to exercise is the muscles that open the hand. You need to keep the muscles of the forearm in balance and doing any type of forearm exercise that involves resistance to opening the hand should be used. Even just putting rubber bands around the fingers and thumb and trying to open them will be of great value. The grip strength develops rather quickly when you first start out but will level off after awhile and you will have to use more intensity to keep the improvements coming. Use a lot of different exercises to work the muscles from different angles. Make forearm grip training a part of your routine and you will see a difference in your strength.
