Have you ever thought how your feet can affect your back? And if you have back pain could it be possible that your feet have something to do with it? Much research has been done in how our feet can affect our backs. Ladies who wear high heels often have some issues with back pain; ill fitting shoes can also cause trouble all contribute towards back pain. Sprained and damaged ankles again fall into this category. So what can we do about it? Here is a simple exercise where we are going to Arch the Feet. Standing up straight and with your feet parallel about 5 inches apart (about 11 centimetres), then lifting your toes off the floor and see if you can separate them. Then as you place them back to the floor keep them widely spaced as possible. Then with your toes grasping the floor, keep them straight and not letting them scrunch up, lift your arches only, hold this for 20 or 30 seconds and release, then repeat six or seven times. Another little exercise is the Toe Push Back. Kneel on the floor and bring your toes under with the little toes out. You are now sitting on your heels, then rock gently forward and back alternating the pressure as you wish. Repeat as often as you would like. You can see how you can reverse this. Still kneeling on your heels bring your toes flat on the floor. Bring your hands slightly behind you and with elbows a little bent so that your knees come off the floor so you are rocking back and forth as far as possible. Repeat as often as possible. Another little exercise is the Dowling Rod or Dowling Torture as some would say. Using a long broom handle or something similar on the floor, and if you need to support yourself use a chair or a wall to help you. Now start to walk on the dowling rod gently placing your feet inch by inch (or centimetre) up and down the rod. Do take car as this may be a little bit strong for those who have tension in the feet. You will get used to this exercise after a while. If you would like to take this a stage further, use metal garden canes from your local garden centre, these have little nodules on them to give you deeper massage. I hope you find this useful, until the next time. Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher. Glen is a yoga expert whom loves to teach you how to lose your neck, shoulder and back pain with yoga.
