“It takes a little bit luck. You’ve got to want it bad, you’ve got to be competent, and work hard” (Joe Tyler). Joe Tyler, who is the Founder of Tyler Sheet Metal Inc. started his journey with sheet metal at the age of 16. His whole family was involved with sheet metal, which gave him the advantage of starting out young and having years to experience the business aspect behind it all. Because of this advantage that Tyler had with sheet metal, he eventually started his own business which is now known as Tyler Sheet Metal. Tyler knew that he had to work hard and expand as much as possible without over extending. "An entrepreneur is someone who can take any idea, whether it be a product and/or service, and have the skill set, will and courage to take extreme risk to do whatever it takes to turn that concept into reality and not only bring it to market, but make it a viable product and/or service that people want or need" (Entrepreneurship?, 2017). It took eight years of working 15-16 hours a day for Tyler to turn his business from an idea to an operating business. To get the business up and running Tyler used everything that he had which wasn’t much. He sold an old car for $4000 dollars, and bought used hand machines from old sheet metal shops. He started with no capital and had to trade sweat equity for cash to grow. Tyler never took out loans during the tough times while starting this venture. He toughed it out and did everything he could to take up good jobs to earn the money he needed. The strength of the venture was that the business was based out of the barn that was behind his house, which made the overhead low. One of the worst moments that he experienced was when he took a job too cheap and didn’t know what he was getting himself into. He had installed 1700 lockers and had to remove quite a few because they were the wrong style. “It’s not about money or connections. It’s the willingness to outwork and outlearn everyone when it comes to your business. And if it fails, you learn from what happened and do a better job next time” (Mark Cuban, Entrepreneur). Tyler knew the moment he received his first check for over a million dollars that he had finally made it. During his venture into the business world, he learned that “reputation is the most important thing, be honest, and take care of customers by sticking to your word even if it costs you.” Entrepreneurship?, W.
