The holidays are famous for being a joyful time of year to spend with friends and family…but getting sick or gaining a few kilos can really make you regret what you ate. Use these tips to avoid either of those outcomes and make it through the season in good shape. 1. Limit the sweets Considering that I recently wrote about the many dangers of sugar, I thought this deserved to be number 1 on the list! One cookie here or there won’t kill you, but for the sake of your health (in the short term and the long term), don’t load up your plate at the dessert table. 2. Stay hydrated There are many perks of drinking enough water that are specifically relevant to the holidays. For example: 1. It helps you ward off sickness, 2. It can prevent overeating by helping you feel fuller before a big meal, and 3. It’ll help you avoid a hangover after that Christmas or New Years Eve party. Drink alkaline water to get the added benefit of removing toxins from your body. 3. Wash your hands often If people will be coming in and out of your home for the next several weeks, no doubt they will be bringing in unwanted bugs or viruses. Even if no one is displaying symptoms of a cold or flu, they may still be carrying germs. One of the easiest ways to prevent getting sick is to practice good hygiene. 4. Prepare healthy snacks Skip the potato chips and resist unhealthy temptations by preparing healthier options such as roast veggies or celery, cucumber, carrot sticks with hummus. 5. Introduce a fun holiday activity Too many families’ traditions revolve around stuffing themselves with a big meal, then spending the rest of the day socialising at the table or passed out on the couch in a food coma. If you can, get everyone outside for a friendly sports competition or a brisk walk to the park or beach. 6. Start your day with a vegetable juice When you’re going from one party to the next, you’re not exactly eating foods with high nutritional content. If you start your day with a cold pressed vegetable juice you’re already winning. But don’t take that as a free ticket to indulge in junk food the rest of the day! 7. Take nutritional supplements I’m not talking about multivitamins as many of them are difficult to digest and may even be harmful for you. I’m referring to supplements most of us are deficient in. Most of us are low in vitamin D and magnesium so these are a must while many can benefit from a boost of vitamin C. 8. Get enough sleep I know, you’ve got dinners and parties to attend that seem like higher priorities than sleep during this holiday season. But being well-rested is crucial for staying in peak condition (and skimping on it can lead to weight gain, too) so make time! Even if that means sacrificing half an hour of web surfing so you can get to bed earlier. If you slip up on any of these, don’t beat yourself up. You’re only human! Enjoy the holidays, stay safe, and I’ll see you in 2016. Do you have a great tip you’d like to share? Comment below. For more natural health tips visit our blog at: http://www.alkalife.com.au/blog
