Summer is here and for many of you it means lot of parties and a little overindulging. Come 2015 and you may be thinking about going on a detox. But detoxing shouldn’t be a once a quarter activity. I believe you should be detoxing every single day by using these 10 tips. 1. Drinking alcohol? Alternate a glass of alkalife Natural Alkaline Water with each alcoholic drink to minimise the hangover effect. Naturally I’m going to say alkalife as opposed to any regular water because it gives your body a boost of alkalinity to offset the acidic alcohol. Tap, filtered or spring water are nowhere near as effective in flushing out toxins than alkalife. Of course, the best tip is to stop drinking completely, but where’s the fun in that? 2. Restrict your sugar intake. It’s hard not to indulge yourself with cakes, chocolate and dessert when you have people over for dinner. These are obvious sources of sugar and you’ll probably try and limit these anyway but there are many other sources you may not be aware of. Soft drinks, flavoured teas, flavoured yoghurt, sauces, dried fruit are surprisingly high sources of sugar. I would say sugar is the biggest killer worldwide, contributing to almost every illness you can think of. So do yourself a big favour and cut back before you really do some harm. 3. Keep your vegie intake up by complementing your meals with a nice big colourful salad. You can’t detox without fresh vegetables and with summer get togethers happening, the tendency is to have a barbie with snags and steaks and very little greens. Not only will they give you the vitamins and minerals you need when detoxing, they are also easier on the digestive system. 4. Find ways to reduce your stress levels. Stress not only affects your mind but physiological changes too. Participate in calming activities such as yoga, meditation, reading, a hot bath, or anything that will help your body to relax. 5. Get sweaty! You all know that exercising is a great way to help draw out toxins through your sweat. Exercising reduces your stress levels, improve your mood, reduces the onset of disease and so much more. 6. Add foods with friendly bacteria to maintain a healthy gut and give your immune system a boost. Incorporating fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables) and kefir will provide your body with beneficial bacteria that helps digest food and provide you with more energy. 7. Go green! Regularly having cold pressed juices made with predominantly green vegetables will cleanse your digestive system and help things move along nicely. It also gives you a powerful punch of nutrition you would otherwise have trouble eating. 8. Get ample sleep. Your body cleanses itself while you sleep, with the liver doing a lot of its dirty work in the early morning hours. It’s also been shown that people who sleep less than seven hours a day are at greater risk of cardiovascular diseases. 9. Reduce your exposure to chemicals. If you’re detoxing, it makes sense to reduce your exposure to toxins. Whether you realise it or not, you’re exposed to chemicals everywhere: in your tap water, food, shampoo, sunscreen, the air and so on and we need to take care to minimise exposure where possible. One of the main principles of the Gerson therapy I talked about last week is based on eliminating toxicity to kill cancer cells. 10. Eat more fibre. We all know that eating high fibre foods helps keep you regular but did you know that it also helps you maintain a strong immune system? Soluble fibres create good bacteria needed to fight off bad bacteria meaning that your body is less exposed to harmful toxins that could cause cancer and other illness. I know many of these you’ve heard of already but some people just need to be constantly reminded (like me)! Keeping these tips in mind this summer will give you more energy, give your liver a lighter workload and minimise the aftermath of the Festive season.
