Why Distilled Water Will Kill You (Slowly)

Health,Fitness,Food & Beverages
Many of you have opted for distilled water over tap or filtered because it’s claimed to be “pure”. It contains no minerals so it doesn’t get as “pure” as that right? But what effect does this have and is it really what your body needs? Well I’m afraid if you’re drinking distilled water, I’ve got news for you and you’re not going to like it.

what is distilled water

What is Distilled Water?

Distilled water is any water that has undergone purification through distillation. During this process, the impurities are removed by boiling the water and then condensing the vapour. Some people confuse distilled water with purified water. While distilled water is a type of purified water (water that has been filtered), not all purified water is distilled water.

Distilled water contains no minerals which causes it to be highly reactive (many metals are dissolved by distilled water!) As a result it needs to attach itself to anything to regain its balance. If it is exposed to air it will draw in carbon dioxide and make it acidic. If you drink it, it leaches onto toxins but also valuable minerals and electrolytes and expels it from your body. In theory distilled water should have a neutral pH (pH 7.0) as it is completely balanced, however due to its nature it is acidic. You can test this yourself using litmus paper.

Why Distilled Water Is Dangerous

I recommend drinking distilled water if you’re going on a short detox for a few days but I would never recommend it for long term use. Here’s why.

Distilled water increases the body’s acidity. As I mentioned above, due to its nature, distilled water is acidic. The more you drink it, the more acidic your body will become. This creates an extra burden on your body to increase its pH and get back to an alkaline state. Remember, diseases, bacteria and algae cannot survive in an alkaline environment but thrive in an acidic one.

The more minerals and electrolytes you lose increase your risk of dis-ease. When you drink distilled water on a regular basis, the mineral reserves of your body get flushed out together with the toxins. This will eventually kill you! Your whole body functions through the use of minerals derived from food and water. Intracellular and extracellular activities cannot be performed without the presence of minerals. All your bodily functions rely on minerals! By the way, did I mention how important minerals are?? Flushing it out will have grave effects (no pun intended). Distilled water does not effectively hydrate you. The size and shape of the water molecule clusters that have undergone distillation are larger than that of alkaline water. The process also destroys the natural crystalline structure of the water. As a result, it is not easily absorbed into your body tissues. Simply put, distilled water is “dead water”.

An Alternative

Now I’m going to be a little biased but natural alkaline water is definitely worth taking a look into. Alkaline water tackles all the above issues that are created by distilled water and much more. It helps neutralise acidic waste in your body and flush it out safely. There is no loss of minerals, rather a healthy dose of essential alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium and effectively hydrates you with finer water molecules. If you’re not drinking alkaline water, I highly recommend you get a hold of some. =)

Key takeaways:

Stay away from distilled water like the plague! Unless you’re on a short detox. Distilled water flushes out toxins, but it also flushes out important minerals. Consider switching to alkaline water to bring yourself back to an alkaline state and effectively hydrate you.
