Brent Colbert of Blythe Gives 5 Steps to Being a Better Manager

Career,Advice
Brent Colbert of Blythe has spent many years working with and managing people in a business environment. Along the way he has learned what techniques work well and which do not when it comes to supervising employees. Over the past two decades he has been keeping a journal to record the best management tactics and methods. Some are things Brent Colbert of Blythe has personally done himself, and others are methods he has seen respected colleagues master.

What follows are 5 steps to becoming a better manager, as suggested by Brent Colbert of Blythe.

(1) Don’t Hold a Double Standard

If you want to be a successful manager and have people that respond to authority you can’t hold yourself to a double standard. Brent Colbert of Blythe says you cannot ask anything of your subordinates that you yourself would not adhere to. Your employees are watching your every move, and if you say lunch breaks can only last for 30 minutes, then even the boss shouldn’t take lunch breaks longer than half an hour.

(2) Motivate Your Employees

This should be self-explanatory, but good motivation drives employees to work harder. Motivation could be positive reinforcement, compliments, salary-based incentives, or any number of things. Brent Colbert of Blythe is a firm believer in positively reinforcing good behavior.

(3) Establish Clear Lines of Communication

Brent Colbert of Blythe is good at making sure his employees are always able to contact him. He makes a timely effort to respond to every phone call or email whenever possible. Making yourself easily accessible as a manager goes a long way in encouraging honest communication.

(4) Your Employees are People Too

Make sure you remember that your employees have lives outside of work too. Brent Colbert of Blythe likes to become familiar with his workers’ personal lives. Not only does it make him appreciate the people he works with more, but it also gives him keen insight on ways to better motivate them.

(5) Don’t Be a Bully

We have all worked for those bosses that never let down your mistakes. Put simply, don’t be that manager! Allow your employees to make mistakes and learn from them. This doesn’t mean not acknowledging when a mistake is made, but it means not holding it over their head indefinitely. Brent Colbert of Blythe says that when employees of his makes a mistake he points it out, helps them learn from it, and then lets them know it is in the past so they can move forward and be productive.

Brent Colbert of Blythe hopes these five points will help you become a better and more successful manager in the future.
