Game Designer, a Career By: Andoy There was a point in time when games were small programs kids in college did just to prove that they had: (1) a life; (2) they can program; (3) they can have fun while programming; or (4) all of the above. I would guess it's reason number 4. And then things changed. It was not gradual, but it was not generally noticed either. The first major change was in the interface. From the first command line adventure games, these evolved to graphical games. The development of a graphical game engine was a game changer in so many ways. There are still residuals of the original DOOM engine which can be seen in current first-player shooter games. Nowadays, the games are slowly migrating to browser platforms, consoles and tablets/smartphones. Other parallel developments was in the people who do games. At first the bored kid writing the command-line game was someone who wanted to be a programmer. The graphical UI brought in the graphics guys who designed the players, as well as the engineering graphics guys who did the CAD for the buildings as well as the textures. And now there's a new class of people in the building: the game designers. These guys create the script, work out the intricacies of the game, the level of difficulty, as well as put in the logic and the easter eggs. In the Philippines, as of last count, there are less than 10 of them (actually about 5) who have the very geeky title of "Game Designer." This growing breed of people work for small companies which create games for the iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android, java and browser based flash and HTML5 games. They come from different backgrounds (not necessarily IT) but they do love their work. Even though game designers may not have an IT background, they are now forced to learn some programming even if just to have an appreciation of how hard the coding work can be. Game development is starting to snowball and there is a growing need for techs who can fill in the positions. Emerging technologies in games are the smartphones, tablets, consoles and browser. Emerging skill sets are flash animation with active script, HTML5, Java, and iOS programming. For a game designer, requirements remain the same: lots of patience to play games, and the creativity to imagine games and game scenarios.
