Does it use Facebook? If you’re a business owner, you really need to set up a Fan Page if you don’t already have one RIGHT NOW! Don’t know how? Never fear! That’s exactly what we want to help you do TODAY. Welcome to the SMART Congress beginner’s guide to setting up your very own Fan Page on Facebook for your business. Why Fan Pages? Facebook Fan Pages are different than profiles. You may already have a profile for yourself, ie: John Smith, but your business can’t have a profile — it has to have a Fan Page. A Fan Page is a place to display all the important information about your company. They’re useful because you can include everything that relates to your business in one place – even if you don’t already have a website. One of the major benefits of having a Fan Page on Facebook over a webpage is that it’s really simple to update. You don’t need to know any programming or html encoding; anyone who’s ever filled in a form online can do it. Best of all, it’s free to set up and maintain. What’s more, the more frequently you update it, the fresher your content, and the more people you will engage. Here are just some of the things you should consider including in your Fan Page: - Overview of company - Website and contact info - Press releases - Videos - Blog Posts - Twitter updates - Company news, status, announcements - Customer interaction But first, you need to set one up! Setting Up Your Page Step 1: Once you’ve logged in to Facebook (with your profile), click on the little “down arrow” next to your name (in the upper right hand corner of your screen) and click on Advertise in the pull down menu that appears. Step 2: Go to the “Step 1: Build Your Facebook Page” section in the middle of the page and click on “Create a Page.” Step 3: Select the Type of business from one of the 6 options available. The box will pull down and you will have to select the “Category” of business you own and relevant information of your business. What information you have to complete depends on your business type. Step 4: Here’s where you upload your company profile, logo, videos, images, and everything else you already have. The profile picture will appear on every post you make, so make sure it reinforces your branding. Your logo would be a great profile picture. Step 5: Start filling in all the rest of your details in the next screen. The more info you add, the better your page will be (and remember: Google thinks VERY highly of Facebook in its search engine results). Add in any website links you may already have here as well. You can always complete all this information or choose a different picture now or “Skip” this step and do it later. Step 6: Enter an address for your Facebook Fan Page. Your company name would be great. Step 7: Once you’re satisfied with the Page, publish it. Facebook will prompt you to “Like” your own page, invite your friends, put up a status update, and so on. You can also now use a larger image on your Timeline. There all done! Easier than you thought wasn’t it? Now that you’ve got a Facebook Fan Page for your business, you’re off to a fantastic start. What you need to do now is let everyone know about it. You need to promote it to get the most out of your Facebook Page. We’ll be following up with a more detailed look at using your Facebook Fan page effectively so look out for more in the Getting Started In Your Online Business series.
