It is a natural thing to want a good career. First and foremost, a career will give you financial stability. If you have a family and dependents, it will also give you peace of mind that you can provide for them. A career post will enable you to provide your children with a decent education, giving them a good start in life on which they can build. Having a good income will enable you to have all the trappings of a modern life and you won't need to worry if the car or fridge breaks down, or how you will pay the next energy bill or credit card bill. But how can you get into a career post? The answer sounds simple. The first step is to write a good CV or resume. Why? Because a well written CV or resume will get you noticed. Getting noticed is the first step to getting and interview. Then you stand a chance! But actually, writing an effective CV or resume is a tricky thing. Firstly, it should illustrate your strengths in order to show a prospective employer that you have the skills and knowledge to do the job properly and do it well. Secondly, it should offer up factual information such as previous employment, education and of course how you can be contacted. There are many views about putting together a truly effective curriculum vitae that will get you noticed. Some say that it should be fitted onto a single page of A4. Others say that it doesn't really matter, however, one thing is for sure - you should use only one side of the paper, no matter how many pages you use. Your CV operates on two levels, one is an impression level and the other is the visible level. That is to say that the presentation of the information speaks to the potential employer as well as the words that are written. It is possible to be quite creative with your curriculum vitae, especially if you are trying to get into a creative industry such as graphic design or marketing. In the latter cases, having a cover page with your name and address on, followed by a creative photograph of yourself and a short profile would be appropriate. The factual information can then follow on a third sheet of paper (and fourth if necessary) to complete the document. The use of a modern looking artistic font would also be appropriate. For a curriculum vitae for someone applying to an engineering firm, a creative version might work but it would be more appropriate to have a no-nonsense simple cv using a modern sans serif font and well structured layout to demonstrate that you are organised and get straight to the heart of the matter. When writing your document, you should start by listing the skills that you have which are relevant to the specific job. Then you can draft your personal statement. This should be read and re-read and edited to get it just right. It should be concise but not to the point of being terse. It should show your self-confidence but without bragging. It is also the place to show how you would be of benefit to the company. Too many applicants make the mistake of focussing on themselves. It is helpful to the recipient if you use headings, that will enable them to re-visit sections of your CV more easily when they are comparing several potential employees. Everything you include should be honest and be easily substantiated. Employers are generally not keen on liars. If your degree was a 2.2, state that, don't inflate it to a 2.1 or a first as you will be found out sooner or later and then ... well, you could easily be on the hunt for new employment!
