A Career in Copywriting Is The Writer in You Waiting to Come Out? If you’re tired of your job, the hours, the politics and the commute and you’re looking for another way to make your living where you can make some really good money and do something you enjoy, a career as a freelance copywriter might be for you. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up on Monday morning without that obnoxious alarm jolting you out of bed way earlier than you’d like to get up? Think about it seriously for a few minutes. You wake up naturally, get a shower, take the dog out for a walk, and head down to the coffee shop for breakfast and head back to your home office and get started working. It’s 11:00 AM. It looks pretty nice doesn’t it? No stressing in traffic, no boss to have to deal with, no office politics. Well, as a freelance copywriter, this could actually be your work week. Want to know more? A copywriter is a writer that works with businesses on marketing materials such as ads, newsletters, sales letters, web copy and any type of writing a business would use to educate, motivate, inform or persuade. You are basically helping businesses to let the public know what they have to offer and how it will benefit them. Let’s take a closer look at why becoming a copywriter or commercial writer as it is sometimes called, could be the perfect career for you. • First, you would have to like to write and be able to communicate clearly and effectively. • You’d have to be able to market yourself to let businesses know you are available to help them get their message out. • Many different types of businesses means there is a lot of potential clients for you. The need is unlimited and so are the different types of projects you would do. • Let’s face it, now is a great time to control your work life and career. How many people do you know that have been downsized? Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to worry if you are next? • A copywriting career thrives in any economy. As a freelancer, you will be the one they call when they cut their own writing staff due to downsizing. • Great pay! Do you know that as a beginner you could (and should) set your fees at $50.00 dollars an hour? • Low investment to get started and low overhead for the long haul. All you need is a computer, a quiet place to work, a phone line, e-mail account and a printer. Oh and business cards too. Think about it, what other business can you start without loans, overhead and hassles. • If you despise the same routine, same assignments and crave a bit of variety in your day, a career as a copywriter will give it to you. You may be working on a brochure for a bank one day and a newsletter for a non-profit the next. • You would have a great opportunity to leverage what you already know. Do you have a background in the health industry? Engineering? Law? Use what you know and focus on that industry first. Not a bad life for a writer. I know I live it too. The great part is that you can start this career while you still have a job, or if you’re a stay at home mom, or in college, or any other circumstances you may be in. You have full control and can start slow or hit the pavement running; it is all up to you. You may be wondering about what you should do to get started. Well, there are many copywriting courses available, and yes, some of them cost hundreds of dollars, but I found a course that is being given away for FREE for a limited time. I ordered one myself (it was free!) and to be honest, I wondered what I would get. After all, I have bought several courses and paid well over four hundred dollars for many of them and the fact that this one was free, well I really didn’t expect a lot. But I will say, I learned more in this free course than I have in some of the courses I paid big bucks for and all I had to pay was the shipping cost. I thought this was such a great course I thought I’d spread the word and hopefully it will help even one writer say goodbye to the low paying writing jobs they are taking and help them to make some real money doing what they love.
