Blurring of vision is a common occurrence with advancing age. For people over the age of 60, the common cause of hazy vision is the development of cataracts. In the beginning, the cloudy opacity in the lens of the eye may not be noticeable. Over time, the clouded vision can adversely affect everyday activities like reading and driving most especially at night. Other accompanying symptoms include sensitivity to glare, seeing halos around lights, fading of colours or decreased vividness of colours, and sometimes double vision in a single eye. In the initial stages of the disease, a change in prescription lenses can help improve vision. Stronger lighting also aid in seeing well especially indoors. Using sunglasses are helpful to decrease glare. Sometimes, magnifying lenses are used for reading fine print and for doing close work. Treatment for cataracts related to ageing may not be required if there are no symptoms or if eyesight is only minimally affected. For severe cataracts, surgery is the only successful treatment method. This is carried out under local anaesthesia to prevent any feeling of pain during the procedure. Before the surgery, appropriate patient evaluation and eye measurement will be done. This will help the doctor is choosing the right replacement lens for the patient. Just before the operation, eye drops are instilled to widen the pupil or the black circle part of the eye. The procedure is fairly quick and no pain is felt during the entire surgery. The most common cataract surgery is called phacoemulsification or phaco extracapsular extraction. The incision made on the lens is small and ultrasound or sound waves are used to break up the clouded lens in to smaller pieces. These broken up pieces are then easily suctioned out, after which a replacement lens is put in place of the diseased one. Another surgical method is called ECCE or standard extracapsular cataract extraction. In this procedure, a larger cut is made in the eye compared to the previous method. In contrast with phaco method, the lens is removed in one piece rather than being broken up by sound waves. The lens and the lens capsule are removed. However, this procedure is now rarely done. It might take a little time to appreciate full vision improvement after surgery. More than 95 percent will have highly successful outcomes. Cataract surgery is both safe and effective for almost all people who need it. This translates to better quality of life after the treatment. Currently, some people are pushing for alternative treatments for cataract surgery. These alternative methods seem to only control the progression of cataracts rather than treat the condition completely. With all the advocated alternatives, it must be stressed that cataracts cannot be treated without surgical removal. These surgical substitutes do not really treat cataracts but may rather serve to help prevent the advancement of this eye condition. There are some who recommend limiting the intake of milk and milk products as these are said to promote cataracts formation. Diet supplements like taking in riboflavin, copper, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc are purportedly useful in preventing and treating cataracts. However, these are not backed by adequate scientific studies. Juice therapy is said to fight free radicals and damaging elements that attack the protein of the eye lens. However, even the juicing experts can only claim to slow down cataracts progression and not reversing the condition. The other common recommendations for slowing down cataract formation are by cutting down on alcohol consumption and cessation of cigarette smoking. Others suggest eating more green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, foods rich in vitamin A, and supplementing with known antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. With all the above recommendations, theories, and suggestions, there is still no better and proven way to treat cataracts than by surgical removal. For people with vision problems and eye diseases, consulting an eye surgeon for any eye problems will ensure proper evaluation. Whether the procedure is refractive surgery, glaucoma surgery, or cataracts surgery , best results are achieved with proper evaluation and early management under competent doctors.
