A life settlement refers to the sale of a life insurance policy by the owner of the policy for less than the face value of the policy. The settlement is sold to a third party. This third party will profit when the insured dies by collecting more money in the death benefits that were paid out. The third party will receive higher profits the sooner the original policy holder dies. The policy holder can not have a catastrophic or life-threatening illness or condition in order to be eligible. Life settlements are an attractive option for the policy owner who is above 70 years of age. It is estimated that among this age group, over half of the policies have a market value that far surpasses the cash value that is offered by the original carrier.
