Develop Your Talents Beyond The Promotion You have arrived! You have finally been tagged the position you have always wanted and you are raring to go. There are many things you have been waiting to do...so much you want to achieve. It feels pretty good and without a doubt, you deserve to bask in the glory of finally having made it....congratulations! Whether you know it or not, there is hidden danger lurking in the shadows and if you don’t take the steps now to head it off, it could derail your success. That danger is...you believe you have arrived. In a recent article by Chris Cancialosi at gothamCulture, he states, “While many people are resistant to change, today’s leaders simply do not have that luxury. Technology and customer preferences are evolving so rapidly that the only businesses that will survive are those that are constantly adapting to changing conditions. Leaders must train themselves and their organizations to thrive in disequilibrium and embrace this constant state of flux.” The danger in believing you “have arrived”, is if you are not careful, it has you behave as if you might have been running a marathon. You crossed the finish line...you achieved your goal and now you can check it off your list as having been accomplished. You are done training, practices, developing and growing. Planning to succeed over the long haul, requires you to take steps now, to push you through the danger of letting all your hard work go to waste. Here are a couple of steps to take: - Learn what it takes to lead people – Chances are you were promoted based on your technical skills and abilities. Taking on a management or leadership role, whether you recognize it or not, is a career change...not a progression. Many people fail to understand, this constitutes an entirely different skill set and knowledge base. One of the reasons new managers fail is because they are expected to pick up these skills on the fly. They don’t recognize or are trained in what it means to lead people. Construct a development plan, away from what you are comfortable with and push yourself to learn about how to motivate and engage people. - Identify what you are shooting for next – You maybe in what you think is your dream job, however if you were to dare to dream a little bigger, what would be the next thing you would want to accomplish in your career? This can be a skill, a position, a different company...whatever. Think about what you want to accomplish next and write it down somewhere. Think about what makes that attractive for you and ask yourself how you can start creating that where you are. - Find a mentor – Everyone needs someone who is going to push them. It is easy to fall into the victim traps...”we have always done it this way”, “I can’t get this done”, etc. Find someone who isn’t willing to let you off the hook and make a contract with them early on, to push you through your perceived limitations. It is obvious you have a lot to contribute to your organization, so just as you have taken control in getting where you are today, take control to ensure your ongoing success.
