If you’re a man born before the end of the World War 2, chances are you own a hat. Not a piece of utilitarian headgear to keep out the cold, but rather you own a hat as a fashion accessory. For centuries no man would go outside without a hat. From mill worker to mill owner, every man wore a hat. However, very few people under fifty now wear formal hats. They have rather faded from fashion. Another fashion item is fading from a young man’s wardrobe is shoes. I don’t mean that people are going around barefooted, rather that leather shoes seem to be on the wane. Many people opt for trainers or other fabric footwear like deck shoes, sneakers or pumps. I often wonder why the young have moved away from leather. My first thoughts were that trainers were cheaper than traditional shoes. After all, times are hard and people must save money where they can, right? However fashionable trainers can sometimes cost more than a pair of good shoes. So cost is not the reason. What about comfort? Certainly fabric shoes look more comfortable and even some of the most expensive leather shoes need wearing-in. Today’s generation of young people are used to having everything at high speed, communication, etc. so are they unwilling to spend time to break in shoes? Certainly the less you wear shoes the less your feet are accustomed to wearing shoes. But seeing young lads go off to the pub without a coat, when there is six inches of frost on the ground, convinces me that they can suffer for fashion. I cannot understand why people wear fabric footwear when Britain has so high a level of rainfall. However, modern fabrics are as hard-wearing and even more waterproof than leather. Leather will leak unless you look after it, so do the young then prefer maintenance-free footwear? Will shoe polishing become a lost art? Unfortunately, whatever the reason, leather is less popular. I for one, would be very sad to see brogues going the way of the hat. For nothing says style and confidence more than a pair of shiny leather shoes. Shoes v Trainers. What do you think?
