Author Comment / Biography: Gene Covington is the son, and the youngest of June G. Covington and Florence A. (Pectol) Covington. Florence being the oldest daughter of Ephraim and Dorothy Pectol who were the Discover’s of the “Pectol Shields.”
He grew up in Wayne County, Utah, which is also where The Pectol Shields were found. These shields are the main subject of his book, Utah’s Stolen Treasures. He says that his mind and soul and physical body were literally created and shaped from the land and its history.
Mr. Covington was born at the beginning of World War II and many of his first memories were of his oldest brothers returning from service in that War. His American heritage and strong American patriotism and loyalty to his country were formed during that extremely patriotic time. He was the fifth of five brothers to join the United States Navy. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years and his service saw the Cuban Bay of Pigs, The North Korean Pueblo incident, the Vietnam War and the cold war. During his growing years, he lived, worked, hunted, fished, shepherded and grew up in the land as his brother, sisters and ancestors had before him. He learned the history and of the heritage of the land from living it and from his Grandfather’s and his parents teachings.
He now resides in Hawaii with his wife. They have 2 sons, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. He says his heart has never left Wayne County, Utah which will always be his home.
