The power of branding means a designer can sometimes get away with inferior products because the fan base is so hooked on the name that they will accept anything as long as it does not fall apart. This does not necessarily mean that all brands are poor; quite the opposite, as the success has always been based upon a spectacularly good original product. There are countless examples of this where a product like a soft drink can end up sponsoring Formula 1 racing and bring out a range of expensive watches at the same time. Once the brand name is firmly established it is not as difficult for that company to launch a completely new product as it is for a brand new company to set up and achieve the same success. D&G shoes from Intense And Funky are an example of a product range that was launched by a company that originally entered the market as designers of women's clothing. The success of their clothing range grew at a great rate and quickly resulted in exclusive stores around the world. In some ways it is logical that if you make the clothes then you should make all the accessories from shoes, watches, jewellery and even perfume. This is the way many designers have gone and is far more common than it ever used to be. Fifty years ago a shoe manufacturer would never have considered producing any other type of merchandise. Also fifty years ago it was usual to walk into a High Street shoe shop and find a couple of dozen manufacturer's names on display but these days there are thousands of names and consequently many shops are exclusively just one label. Despite all these different designs for shoes the fact is that shoes and boots have changed very little over thousands of years. For one thing, they are still mainly made from leather and no other material has bettered this although there are other animal hides used despite the unpopularity of things like crocodile and alligator skins. Few people on this planet live in an environment where shoes are not essential and no matter how fancy the designs are the fact is that the primary function of all shoes is to keep the feet protected, dry and warm. Women often rub moisturising oils into their feet and pride themselves on soles that are as soft as any other area of the body but if they walked bare foot for a couple of years without ever applying oils, the soles of the feet would be just like hardened leather. This phenomena was discovered by many prisoners of war in the Second World War where boots quickly wore out and there were no replacement ones during the marches through the Burmese jungle. Soles quickly hardened to such a degree that those men who survived the war returned to their home countries and were comfortable wearing nothing on their feet for the rest of their lives.
