The best source of foods with DHA Omega 3 fatty acids in them is fish. Fish are rich in the Omega 3 fatty acids. However while we used to eat two or three meals of fish per week, these days it is not wise to eat too much fish because of the pollution in the oceans. These pollutions are found in the fish as well. But more of this later. Our brain is the biggest user of DHA. DHA is used to keep our brain in good shape, ie it keeps us mentally fit. It stops us from having a nervous breakdown. DHA helps to prevent us from having mood swings, bouts of depression and other emotional disorders. DHA helps to improve our memory and recall functions. Some more of the foods with DHA in them are flaxseed, leafy greens like purslane and various nuts. These type of Omega 3 /DHA fatty acids are called ALA, this type of Omega 3 is way down on my list of foods to eat, because the ALA has to be converted over to DHA and EPA. This does not always happen efficiently if you are in poor health or elderly. The best foods with DHA and EPA in them are definitely fish. These fatty acids do not need to be converted by our body, but are used directly by our body. I mentioned up above that the oceans and the fish harbor pollutants. These pollutants must be removed before we take them as fish oil supplements. They need to go through a process called molecular distillation to remove the impurities. These impurities are lead, mercury and the toxins like PCBs etc. once these impurities have been removed, the resultant oil is the cleanest you can buy. Some people call it pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Foods with DHA in them include meat. Once we used to get most of the Omega 3 /DHA fatty acids from the food we ate. Now however with modern day farming practices, the animals are grain fed, leaving them with low amounts of Omega 3/DHA. You can still obtain meat that is rich in DHA fats. Many farmers are listening to the demand of people that want healthy food, and are growing some grass fed animals to cater to the demand. If you go to the farmers markets you can get meat that has been grass fed. You can also get free range poultry and eggs. Now you must remember that a lot of the fish we buy today is farmed. This fish is low in the Omega 3/DHA fatty acids because the fish are fed pellets, not their natural diet. Would you believe it, the salmon that is farmed actually has dye injected into it to give it the pink color that we are used to. I hope this article on foods with DHA in them has proved to be of some benefit to you.
