Do you still remember the time when the Internet was still young, and you are using a dial up connection to connect to the Internet? That was when we were all using a 56k line to download content on the Internet. In those days, because of the slow connection speed, most of the content was static HTML web pages. The Internet today is very different. You now have broadband, high speed Internet connections everywhere you go. And I mean that literally. You can get high speed connections in cafes, at airports, in public libraries, etc. High bandwidth and speed made it possible for content developers to release new media content such as music and videos. An audio file, in compressed MP3 format, averages between 3 to 5MB. Imagine having to download a song using a 56k modem that gets disconnected frequently. It would take days before you can finish downloading an entire album. Today, it would probably take at most a couple of hours. A 5MB file would require about 5 minutes or so, depending on your download speed. Still, for many computer users, this is not ideal. Larger file sizes mean more local disk space is required. There was a time when computers ran out of hard disk space very easily, mostly because of such media files. A 5MB may sound like nothing. But when you consider downloading TV shows or movies, the file size gets really big. An episode is usually around 200 to 300MB, while a full length movie can be 1GB or more! For movie addicts, that means a lot of disk space would be required for the downloaded movies. Otherwise, older movies have to be deleted to make space for newer ones. But technology never stand still. The Internet continued to evolve, and you can now stream full length movies or TV shows on the Internet. Here is how streaming works. When you are attempting to view a streaming video, the video starts off by buffering a portion of the video. This is enough to start playing the video. As you watch the video, you are constantly downloading the rest of the video. This process is transparent to you. The video plays as the download is in progress. This process is known as streaming. You don't need any additional software to stream videos. All you need is a high speed Internet connection, and a modern browser. Most modern browsers come with the necessary plugins needed for streaming the videos. However, in the absence of such a plugin, the website will prompt you to download the plugin for free. Usually, no registration is required for you to start streaming videos. For movie fans, this means great news. You can now start playing back a movie in a matter of seconds instead of having to wait for the entire download to complete. You also do not have to worry about running out of disk space. Watch free streaming movies like Seven Pounds.
