In some countries flashing your headlights means you are allowing the other driver to go, whereas in other countries it means ‘watch out I’m going to pass! Possible differences can include when you should sound your horn, flashing your lights and how to use the motorway lanes correctly. Before taking a car abroad, don’t forget to sign insurance. If you are involved in an accident you don’t want to be liable for the costs as these could turn out to be very expensive, ensure you have liability insurance and this will cover any damage to the rental car also. This will protect you against any damage to the hire car and save you money if anything should happen. You will need to know where you are heading when travelling in Europe. Although the main motorways will all be sign posted, there will be lots of other situations where you can easily lose your way once you are off the motorway, trying to find your way through countryside roads and in the large city centres as you look for accommodation can be confusing. Buy a detailed map or purchase a GPS that is programmed for Europe. Wasting time trying to find the correct way or finding you lost in the one way system in Rome is no fun and will be very frustrating. You might already have GPS that is programmed for Europe, if not you can either have a programme installed or consider buying one once you are there. It all depends on how long you intend to go for and how much your budget is. If you are a good map reader this should suffice. Driving in most countries these days requires you to wear a seat belt and children to be in children’s’ seats or buckled up, even in the back seat. Don’t forget that is it against the law to talk on your mobile while you are driving and take care at all times.
