Your building water supply may need long-term supplemental disinfectants added as a key means of being able to better go about its legionella management and ward off legionella overall. This is a big disease and has for sure been responsible for infecting a large number of people in time so it is key that the correct steps are taken to go about the correct and proper management to what can otherwise be and prove to become a very deadly disease. Your building may need a water management program to reduce the risk for Legionnaires' disease associated with your building water system. There are a number of ways Legionnaires' disease can come about and prove to be a deadly risk factor. In turn, there are also a number of steps that can also be taken in an effort to being able to make sure your building doesn’t carry these types of risks. Legionella bacteria grow when water temperatures are between 20-45°C and at times can in turn be and become impossible to control. To date, around 60 species of Legionella bacteria have been formally identified so as you can imagine there is a somewhat large need and requirement for legionella management to be undertaken. Traditionally, thermal control is the primary means of controlling (but not eradicating) Legionella in water systems is to have hot water stored at 60°C. There are some other major fundamentals to also have in place too. Most outbreaks in the UK have been linked to cooling towers or evaporative condensers as part of industrial cooling systems and air-conditioning which can spread droplets of water over a wide area. Water systems in buildings without these higher risk systems can still pose a potential for legionella growth. This risk is much lower than that associated with water cooled or humidified air management systems but Legionella colonies can still develop in traditional hot and cold water systems, like those used in almost all workplaces, including schools. It is vital for landlords to manage their properties to prevent legionella from becoming present. When it comes to it in detail, it is mainly commercial landlords and commercial property owners that very much need to have this all in place and have this covered from a legal stand point as the consequences when this isn’t taken care of can be rather awful. This too is also why and how legionella management is such big business and why so many people are calling on this as a service to eradicate it from their buildings.
