Over the years, the music scene on the Balearic island of Mallorca (also known as Majorca) has become legendary. International stars including the Beach Boys, Kool & the Gang, and Elton John have all performed at one of the island’s many impressive music venues and outdoor festival sites, such as the Palma Arena and BH Hotel. The renowned holiday resort of Magaluf also comes alive in the summer, playing host to massive parties with an impressive set of acts, from DJ Carl Cox to Groove Armada and Pete Tong. For those looking for a more intimate musical setting, many bars around the island feature cosy live performances. You can always find something to match your tastes, with artists playing rock, reggae, pop, funk, blues,or soul late into the night. During summer fiestas, it’s even possible to find costumed locals performing the Ball dels Cossiers, Mallorca’s traditional fourteenth-century dance, accompanied by the ‘xeremia’, an old Mallorcan instrument similar to the Scottish bagpipes. Two of the lesser known highlights of Mallorca’s musical calendar, however, are the Mallorca Live Festival and Smooth Jazz Festival, which take place each year in the middle of May. For lovers of indie rock and jazz, these are two great festivals you won’t want to miss! Live Festival Located in an abandoned water park under the shadow of the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, Mallorca Live is where you can really dance the night away. Although only a fifteen-minute walk outside of Magaluf, the crowd, though still young, is a tad more mature than those you typically find inside the resort. Everyone is there to appreciate the music and so the atmosphere is wonderfully friendly and party-like. A lot of stage time is given to Spanish indie rock bands, which draws in locals as well as tourists, although familiar British names like The Vaccines also make an appearance. There are a whole host of Spanish artists which are being missed by English-speaking audiences, and this is the place to find them! Smooth Jazz Festival Mallorca’s Smooth Jazz event is the only one of its kind on any European Mediterranean coastline. Set in the five-star Protur Biomar Gran Hotel and Spa, this is a festival for those who enjoy the finer things in life. The hotel, which boasts landscaped gardens as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, is just300 metres from the beach right in the Punta de n’Amer Natural Park. The audience, which spans three generations, have come to relax and enjoy the wonderful sound of artists such as Tom Braxton, Phil Denny, Larry Braggs, and others. This is the ideal festival for those looking for good music, good weather, and good food. How to Get There The easiest way to ensure a hassle-free start to your musical holiday is by pre-booking a Mallorca airport taxi before you leave home.
