A Haven for History Buffs: Portugal's Top Historic Sites

Travel & Tourism
For history buffs, there’s no place like Portugal for your one-stop-shop for some of the best Roman ruins, culturally-important cathedrals and marvellous monuments. Here are our picks for some great historic sites that are sure to be at the top of your must-see list on your next holiday to sunny Portugal.

St George’s Castle

Looking out over the Tagus River, this medieval monument is one of the highest points in the city of Lisbon. Climb up to the Ulysses Tower for some truly breath-taking views of the city, and then be sure to stick around to explore the various historic rooms, battlements and temporary exhibits the castle has to offer. Careful observers should also be on the lookout for an old Moorish wall from the 1370s, as remnants of the building’s foundation are still visible today.

Faro Cathedral

Move this landmark to the top of your must-see list! Originally built on an old Roman forum, this historic site later became a mosque and eventually a cathedral. Today, Faro Cathedral charms visitors year after year with its splendid mix of Baroque and Renaissance artwork, gold leaf decoration and interior tiling dating back to the 1600s.

Belem Tower

Travel back in time with a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site, located on Lisbon’s River Tagus. Constructed in the early fifteenth century, this medieval tower was built to celebrate one of Portugal’s early explorers, Vasco da Gama, and his legendary voyage to India. Decorated in the Manueline style, this fearsome fortress is a site to behold, remaining one of the greatest examples of architecture from its time.

Pena National Palace

Walking into the Pena National Palace is just like stepping into a book of fairy tales. Built in the Romantic style of the 1800s, this delicately-detailed destination is sure to delight with its multi-coloured towers and turrets. Outside of the palace, visitors can take a relaxing stroll through the carefully-manicured gardens filled with statues, fountains and more. It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra’s Cultural Landscape, too.

How to Get There

Plan ahead by booking your Faro airport transfer before you even leave for your trip. When you pre-order your transport with a local shuttle company, you’ll save yourself time and gain peace of mind once you arrive at the airport for your holiday. These shuttle services are easy to book and can be arranged to take you straight to your accommodation upon your arrival at Faro Airport. Transfers are without a doubt the least stressful way to travel!

Portugal’s history spans back generations, so don’t miss out on seeing some of these incredible historic locations on your next holiday getaway. Be sure to book your Faro airport transfer before you leave for your trip, and you’ll be off to scale some medieval walls and visit UNESCO World Heritage sites before you know it.
