The Three Prettiest Drives to Do in Italy

Automotive
Italy’s broad and diverse natural landscape is just calling out for an adventure-filled getaway through the mountains, valleys and lakeside towns – and a sure-fire way to catch the best sights on offer is with a road trip where you can stop by all the beautiful vistas along the way.

Embarking on a road trip, it all starts with the obvious. Renting a car. The next step for any traveller is to get their hands on some car hire excess insurance as a means of security, and once you’ve taken care of the logistics, there are a few key stops to make on your road trip through Italy to guarantee an unforgettable escapade across this Mediterranean utopia.

Abruzzo

Abruzzo, not far from Rome, is a humble region that differs drastically from what you might encounter in the capital. Just an hour away from Rome, Abruzzo is sprinkled with broad mountain landscapes and wild valleys. When starting off from Rome, the A24 motorway reaches Fonte Cerreto. Onwards and upwards, you will pass by Campo Imperatore and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, the latter being a remote village in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.

Eventually, you’ll reach Sulmona, a quaint town renowned for making confetti, and the perfect place to stop off and try out the cuisine.

Lake Como

With endless scenic panoramas, Lake Como is one of Italy’s most charming lakes, which can be found in the north. For a tranquil day trip, the drive will pass art nouveau villas and waterfront gardens, all enveloped by the Alpine mountains.

The town itself is not all Como has to offer. Beyond the historic centre, and Villa Olmo, continue the journey through to Bellagio, another lakeside village with stunning architecture, including Villa Melzi d’Eril. Following the road southeast along the lakeside route will lead to Lecco, then Bergamo.

Tuscany

For an opportunity to catch two astounding medieval cities, a two-day adventure through Florence to Orvieto, in the region Umbria, also brings the opportunity to pass through the esteemed Chianti wine country. To try some authentic Italian goods, make a stop in Greve for some wine tasting and in Panzano for a steak lunch, eventually ending the day in Siena.

Heading off to Montalcino next will offer the chance to try Brunello di Montalcino, a red wine famous across all of Italy. To catch a glimpse of the true beauty of the Tuscan region, just a short drive away will reach Val d’Orcia. Here lies charming hilltop towns, and a landscape littered with cypress trees.

Before You Go

As with any road trip, securing the means of transport is the first priority. When renting a car, purchase car hire excess insurance to save the hassle of paying excess fees if anything should happen to the car.

Car hire excess insurance keeps you covered, but also keeps your mind at ease while you’re on holiday, leaving you to enjoy your time comfortably.

Now that you’re all set, a road trip through the idyllic settings Italy has to offer awaits!
