It’s no secret that the current movies you see being shown at your local movie theater are pretty deep, carefully crafted, and inspiring works of visual art that are certain to get buzz come awards season. While there’s nothing wrong with these movies, sometimes you just want to go watch a movie and laugh your backside off. It’s not that you don’t appreciate stellar acting performances, dramatic scripts, or flawless execution by a director. But when it comes right down to it, nothing pleases the soul more than just being able to let out a big laugh. The issue that comedies often run into is that some actors just don’t want to touch comedic material. There’s a level of vanity that just can’t be shed enough to fully embrace a silly, fun-filled romp from beginning to end. Moreover, even silly comedies are expensive to make, and studios find it hard to want to “green-light” a project they know may not carry prestige or acclaim. Moreover, they want to be sure their investment was worth it. Luckily, there are a few good comedies still making their way through, which is great for the casual movie fan that’s looking to have a fun time at the movies. Life it tough as it is, so why add more of a drag? Here are a few current movies you should check out if you’re in the mood for a good laugh: Smallfoot — We often wonder about the existence of ape-like creatures roaming our forests and making cameos in our out-of-focus home movies. What if we as humans are actually the mysterious creature that they wonder about? This is a really cute movie that’ll keep the whole family entertained and in stitches. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween — What better way to bring generations together than the classic work of R.L Stine? This movie puts the “monsters” in charge of a Goosebumps story yet to be completed. It’s a classic tale of “what if” meets “not on our watch”, with some great results. Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas — Aside from the truly heartwarming message of this timeless holiday classic, it must be said that a critical viewing of the original animated film is full of gorgeously-timed comedic moments, devastatingly funny facial expressions, and, of course, the zany language of Dr. Seuss. This reimagining looks to be a faithful adaptation of the beloved classic. Night School — Take two of the hottest comedic talents going right now & put them against a tremendous cast, and you’ve got the makings of a really funny movie with a surprising amount of heart. Test anxiety, love interests, competing beaus, and hijinks make for a great time. You can make the argument that many of the current movies in theaters labeled as comedies are steered a bit more towards younger audiences, but there’s really no harm in that. Why not make it a family night at the movies? Even the kids need a break everyone once in a while, and there are few people that can’t help but smile when they hear a kid belly-laugh.
