This water heater uses as its main power source electricity and comes in two varieties, which include:
• Tankless—this electric hot water heater is the one that contractors recommend installing because it is the more energy efficient. Instead of heating water and storing it in a tank it heats the water when it is needed. It accomplishes this by running the water through pipes that are equipped with heating elements. This will save the homeowner money because the heat will only be on when the water is heated.
• Traditional—this one has a tank and comes in a few variations. It is said that this one is one of the most inefficient forms of water heaters when it comes to energy. The water is heated and stored in a tank until it is needed. It is possible to make this type of electric hot water heater more energy efficient. You can do this by choosing the right size of water heater, the right water temperature, and use proper water heater insulation but it still will not be as efficient as a tankless water heater. The reason is that heat will still be lost while the water is stored and waiting to be used.
It is thought that a large part of a family’s electric bill is from the electric hot water heater. It is figured that it is fifteen to twenty-five of the bill, but it all depends on the size of the family and how much hot water is consumed monthly.
How energy is measured
How efficient an electric hot water heater is will be measured by how much it costs to produce a million BTUs (British Thermal Units) of heat. An electric water heater, on average, cost $31.12 to produce a million BTUs, according to the United States Department of Energy.
Advantages of an electric hot water heater
• They can be installed almost anywhere
• The energy source required to heat the water is less expensive and no combustion of fuel.
• There is no emission of carbon monoxide so there is no need of ventilation
• The speed of heating the water is very fast
• Life expectancy is more than that of a gas water heater
Disadvantages of an electric hot water heater
• It costs more to purchase an electric water heater than it does a gas water heater
• It costs more to operate an electric water heater
• Can be a potential danger of a fuse blowing or having a short circuit
In conclusion
As you can see there are more advantages than disadvantages having an electric hot water heater and when buying one, choose a tankless one for better energy efficiency.
