How to Keep Cotton Looking Like New

Fashion & Cosmetics

The most effective way to make your cotton garments look as good as new is to take proper care of them. This makes the garments not only last longer, but look better and fade less. It also saves you money on buying replacement clothes on a regular basis.

There are numerous ways you can preserve the look of your cotton fabrics despite repeated washing, ironing, and wearing. These include cleaning your garments well, storing them properly, preserving colors, removing wrinkles and creases, boosting scents, and controlling how much the cottons pill.

Clean Your Cottons Never allow stains to accumulate on your garments, especially those that are vintage. Use a gentle wash cycle with warm water when washing all cottons. Also separate colored garments from white cotton fabrics, such as white cotton dresses, as the former can bleed onto the whites, staining them.

Pay particular attention to dirt hotspots, such as the neck area and underarms. Stains in these areas may require you to pre-treat the garment with chemical washing solutions to get the dirt out. As a precautionary measure, always avoid ironing cottons before removing all stains, as this makes stain removal difficult after washing.

Remove Wrinkles and Creases Fabrics that stay in the dryer long after their drying cycles end usually wind up wrinkled or creased. To prevent this from occurring, always fold or hang all your garments properly before storing as soon as their dying cycles end.

In addition, give your garments adequate, regular heating using cotton fabric steamers, which can help remove or reduce wrinkles. Fabric steamers soften and straighten fibers, leaving them free of wrinkles. Regular ironing of clothes also helps reduce wrinkles and creases.

Store Them Well Store all 100 percent cotton clothes in a place that has moderate temperature and humidity. Most bedrooms and linen closets are ideal for this, as they normally have mild temperatures and humidity. Remember to always use hangers when storing clothes in a wardrobe rather than leaving them scattered in your home.

In addition, avoid throwing clothes on bathroom floors, or in a ball with other garments. This not only dirties the clothing items, but makes them wear out faster.

Deal with Pilling Pilling comes as a result of cotton fabrics rubbing against other things. This often happens when you store heavy cottons garments likemen's cotton shirts and black cotton lace in the same container with various nylons, polyester pieces, and rough equipment like baby toys. Pilling can also occur when cotton garments rub against each other during machine washing, distorting the smooth texture of your clothes.

Since reasonable pilling is unavoidable to a certain level, invest in a few fabric shavers or simple razor blades to help you clear pillings off your cottons. This not only helps you remove the pillings, but it preserves the texture of the cottons, adding some life into them.

Maintain the Colors Always preserve the colors in your garments to give them more life and strength. Use lukewarm water during cleaning, since the use of hot water can trigger color bleeding in certain colored cottons, leading to color fading.

In addition, consistently use gentle detergent to enhance the fresh look of your cotton clothes. Using harsh detergents like bleach on colored clothes like baby cotton fabric can backfire, leaving them discolored.

Boost the Scent Never underestimate the power of scents in your cotton clothes. Use scent boosters to improve the way your cottons smell. More so, if you plan on keeping your cotton clothes stored for longer periods, scents can help preserve them while making them look like new.
