Septic tank installation is an inevitable fact if you live in an area where municipal sewer services are not available. However, there are a few important factors that could easily make your property unsuitable for a septic system. It is important for every homeowner to review these must know facts about the installation of a septic system. Septic tank size: You may think you are saving money by buying a smaller septic tank but you will have to live with any decisions you will make. There are towns and cities that give strict regulations on the size of the septic tank that you must install. Some of the factors that go into the determination will include the number of people living in your house, the number of bedrooms and whether there is a garbage disposal in the home. Don’t assume that you don’t need a garbage disposal; every bit of food waste that is washed down the drain ends up at the bottom of the septic tank. Garbage disposal increase the sludge layer by over 50%. Drain field specifications: Don’t assume that the drain field of the septic system will go to just any place that will be convenient to your landscaping plans when doing septic tanks installation. Experts usually advice against planting anything over the drain field apart from grass so it can hold the soil in place. It is important to ensure that any trees or plants that are planted within the vicinity of the drain field don’t have elaborate structures that are likely to interfere with the drainage trenches. Sometimes it becomes necessary to cut down trees that have well developed roots if they are too close or have them relocated to a different area altogether. As far as the soil is concerned, clay soils are too hard and not porous enough to effectively filter the waste water that flows through it; properties that are entirely clay will require that you bring in some additional soil. Ongoing maintenance: One of the most important things you must always know as a homeowner who intends to do septic tank installation is that it’s also one of the most unforgiving sewage systems. When using a regular sewage system, you can easily pour grease down the drain every time you are cleaning your pans and pots and the muck won’t stick to the pipes too badly; letting any significant amount of grease get into your septic tank is disastrous and will require frequent septic tank pumping in addition to drain field installation and repair. You will also need to carefully design a laundry washing plan so you can avoid introducing too much water into the tank at once; it stirs the sludge layer and the particles can find their way to the drain field making it inefficient.
