Bamboo hardwood floors: You will not get many hardwood flooring materials that are as beautiful, durable and environmentally friendly as bamboo. Bamboo flooring materials are made from bamboo clums or stalks that are shaved into strips which are thereafter kiln dried before they are glued under pressure. The bamboo boards that come out of this process are filled with texture, beauty and color. Since bamboo is actually a grass and not a tree, it grown, harvested and re-harvested over many generations on the same plantation.
Distressed hardwood flooring: Some people want hardwood flooring materials that are new but which are actually centuries old; this is referred to as distressed hardwood flooring. This material is made from planks of hardwood that have been distressed by the manufacturer before the installation on your home. There are several methods of distressing hardwood that include industrial presses that will roll imperfections into the wood as it travels down the assembly line or by custom artisans who use burlap bags filled with bolts and nuts to beat on the planks.
Hand scraped hardwood flooring: Hand scraped hardwood flooring is made from wood that has been professionally worked using hands to make flooring planks; they come out with irregular scrapes, textures and planes if but to prove it. The resultant floor adds tradition and character into the room where they are installed; they come in planks that are far wider than the regular milled flooring boards. If you are interested in this type of hardwood flooring, you need to be very careful to avoid some unscrupulous people who mimic the uniqueness of hand scraped hardwood flooring using industrial processes.
Reclaimed hardwood flooring: This refers to hardwood flooring materials that are made from recycled or reclaimed wood. What attracts some homeowners to this type of flooring material is the fact that it has been made from materials that would have otherwise been destroyed. This is very popular with people who like to have it green. Most of the wood is salvaged from piers, old factories or other large structures across the world.
Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring: This is perhaps the loveliest hardwood flooring material you will ever discover; it features some tight flowing grains that have a beautiful reddish hue which will deepen over time as it continues to be exposed to sunlight. This hardwood is ten times dense than the popular oak flooring.
