6 Steps to Drastically Improve Your Home's Curb Appeal

Home Improvement
If your house looks like a remnant from days long gone or just has not aged well, you might want to consider giving it an exterior remodel. Without this, your home can start looking old and decrepit rather than stylish and attractive.

Of course, even the houses being built today will start to lose their luster. The key, though, is maintaining an older home. Sometimes, though, maintaining it means giving it a modern makeover.

When you take on a rewarding and worthwhile project like exterior remodeling in St. Paul, you will see how value, style, and function improvements will quickly upgrade your property from old and worn to current and alive. Do you want to have the house that cars slow down to get a good look at? Here are 6 steps to achieving that instant wow factor.

1. Find Your Home's Best Side

What is your home's best feature? Be nice. There must be something you love about it. Does it have beautiful awnings? Is there a veranda or front porch with welcoming character? Are the windows elegant and lovely? Does the house simply have a pleasing shape? What about the materials? Are there beautiful wooden posts or limestone trim accents? Write a list of everything you like about your current house.

This is not your way of saying goodbye to your current home. This is information you will need later.

2. Upgrade Your Mailbox

The first thing people see when they locate your home should be a nice grabber. Take the attractive accents from the above list and design a mailbox that accentuates them. A good place to start is to model the top of the mailbox after the highest point on the structure: a roof gable, chimney, dome, etc. If you cannot decide on a color, remember that white is always tasteful. Oh, and be sure that it is a built-in, permanent mailbox, not a plastic box on a stick. 3. Upgrade Your Hardscapes Redesign your walkways and driveway with modern materials. If you plan on changing the exterior color of your home (see below for recommendations), then find a neutral accent color that matches well. Again, white is always an option.

Skip concrete and opt for stone, brick, or another modern and attractive material. Also, be sure to bring out the motifs of the shape of your home in the hardscapes. Match sharp edges with rugged walkways, welcoming arches with curved hardscapes, or clean lines with parallel paths.

4. Give Your House a Face-Lift

Now for the big one. This is the moment at which your house will absolutely transform from a house on its way out to a modern home with the cutting edge in design. Tear down that wooden siding, boring brick, or cracked stucco and replace it with seamless steel siding, a new material that is clean, durable, weather-resistant, glossy, and oh-so contemporary. Not only is it a beautiful material, but it is versatile enough to match even the most traditional home. Whether your home is Victorian, Georgian, craftsman, or 70s suburban, seamless steel will be a suitable fit.

5. Take Advantage of the Details

Now back to those attractive details from number 1. Once you have upgraded your siding and had it painted the color of your choice, you can make your home's architectural standouts pop. Paint your window frames, pillars, trim, railing, etc., to match. If your home is now a bright color, choose a dark color for these architectural accents. Do the opposite if your home is now a cool, dark shade. Balance a neutral color with a vibrant one, and vice versa if your house is now an eye-grabbing hue.

6. Landscape Like You Mean It

Now for the details. Solidify your house's new curb appeal with a lush landscape full of local plant life. Line your pathways, accentuate mature trees, leave vibrant glass raw and untouched, or give your house a charming set of flowers. The choices here are yours. Landscaping is versatile enough that there are not specific types of plants you need for specific styles of homes. Simply arrange plants in such a way that your home's natural beauty is accented. Put up a lattice wall or plant vines if you want. Your plant life can be creative and curated or natural and fresh.

The result of this 6-step process should be a home that looks so dramatically new that your friends, family, and neighbors will not believe it is the same house. And yet, everything you love about your current house will not be eliminated: it will all be emphasized for ultimate curb appeal. All it takes for exterior remodeling in St. Paul to be successful is a few light projects and one major upgrade: seamless steel siding.
