This type of service is specifically designed for the elderly, with various levels of care. This service can range from a day nurse or companion who stops in for a few hours a day at their client’s home to a live-in facility that caters to the elderly with special needs. As people age they are prone to special health problems so in order to become an elder care professional you will need to participate in training programs designed to address these health issues, ensuring that they receive a high level of care. Basic level of care At this level, the care will involve taking care of the elderly who may have trouble getting out of the house and moving around. You would be responsible for dropping by a few times a week to help the tidy up around their house, deliver groceries, or other supplies, helping them with their bills, taking mail to the post office, and more. Basically, you would be ensuring that they are healthy, and living in a pleasant, clean environment with their basic needs met. At this level of care, you would be giving them the important service of companionship. Intense level of care At this level, this is when specific health issues are addressed like memory loss, paralysis, strokes, and other health issues that can affect the elderly. With this type of elder care, you would have more training and be a nurse or licensed practical nurse because you may be required to stop in every day to administer medications. On a non-medical basis you may be required to help them bathe, fix their meals, do light housekeeping, and any other tasks. In a more serious situation, the client may require full time care because they are not mentally or physically capable of living completely independent. In addition to giving this service in a client’s private home it can be offered in specifically designed facilities for the elderly. These are often called assisted living facilities because the staff there assists the elderly with different tasks. This help can range from specialized care for the seriously injured or bedridden residents to the ones that are mobile and independent and need just some basic care like brushing their hair, help getting out of bed, etc. Utilizing this service will help to give the children and relatives of the elderly person peace of mind to know they are being taken care of when they cannot be there to do it themselves. It also allows the elderly to remain as independent as possible for as long as they can so if you are elderly and need some basic help or you know someone who is, check out senior care basic services.
