This is a type of paint that you use for exterior painting your home. This can include your windowsills, shutters, etc. Before you purchase your exterior paint, you need to know what surface you are going to paint, the outside temperature, and what type of paint you are using. Exterior painting is done using either: • Oil-based paint—using this paint will take approximately four hours to dry, which is something you need to take into consideration if you want a faster drying paint. This paint will cover the areas well but you will need to use turpentine to clean your rollers and brushes after using them. This paint does not contract or expand as the weather cools and warms. • Latex paint—this paint is water-based so it is easy to work with. It will dry in approximately sixty minutes or less and you can clean up with just soap and water. For exterior painting, most people prefer this paint because it “breathes.” When paint breathes it means that during colder weather the paint will contract and when the temperature goes up it will expand. This makes latex paint very durable. The only drawback with using latex pain is that it cannot be applied over a surface that has been painted with oil-based paint because as the latex paint dries it could bubble up. If you are getting ready to do exterior painting but are not sure which paint was previously used you should use paint that is oil-based. Before you can start painting you need to prepare the surface, which needs to be dry and clean. If you see any peeling or loose paint you need to sand it down until the surface is smooth. You will also need to make sure that any cracks or holes in the wood are filled. You also need to check the outside temperature because certain paint for exterior painting has specific temperatures in which the paint should be used. For example if the label states that you can use the paint if the temperature is fifty degrees or higher then this is the temperature that it must be outside for the paint to adhere to the work surface This temperature does include the daily high and the overnight reading. You should also make sure that you are painting on days with no rain in the forecast for at least twenty-four hours to allow the paint too fully dry and the weather is fair. If you cannot do the exterior painting yourself you can hire a home improvement contractor to do the painting for you. If you are not sure which paint to use ask the sales clerk where you are buying the exterior paint.
