There are some questions that you need to ask during an interview. Whenever you are working on IT staffing, it's imperative that you learn as much as you can from the person in front of you. What they put on their resume is not enough for you to make a decision as to whether they have the experience and whether they are the right fit for your organization. As a result, it is critical for you to conduct the best possible interview. Four questions should always be asked when you are hiring someone for an IT position. What are your strengths and weaknesses? This is always a good question to ask someone because it allows you to view their level of humility as well as their ego. Many people are likely going to tell you all about their strengths and then tell you that they have no weaknesses. Everyone has weaknesses and you want people to be able to identify them so they know where they need to improve. If you hire someone that says they have no weaknesses, you may have someone that thinks they are always right and is difficult to train. What kind of ongoing training do you participate in? When it comes to IT staffing, there are always changes going on within the industry. It's advantageous to know how a person is staying on the forefront of information. It can be through workshops, conferences, or even subscriptions to various IT magazines. Whatever it is, you want to know about it so you can gage their desire to learn - and determine how they are going to be of help to you in the long run. How do you describe yourself in terms of teamwork? There are going to be instances when you want someone to work in a team environment. Since you cannot lock them inside the IT room all by themselves, you need to be honest and ask how they are going to be involved in teamwork. You can tell a lot about how they feel about the topic by watching their facial expression the moment that you ask the question. Asking them to give you a scenario in the past where they worked well within a team dynamic can also be very telling. If you are in an uncomfortable situation, how do you overcome the obstacle? People need to be given scenarios during an interview so that everything isn't closed questions of "yes" and "no". Let people tell you about an obstacle that they had to overcome and what they did about it. Try to keep it on IT staffing topics, but if they cannot, let them use a personal experience to demonstrate the obstacle. This can tell you a lot about the person's tenacity and ability to deal with stress. Asking questions isn't always the easiest, but when you have a few good ones to ask, you can find out more details and therefore make a better decision as to who you will hire.
