Hypnosis as a term was introduced by a man called James Braid in 1841, before that had been called Mesmerism. Braid had decided to change the name as he now had a new understanding of hypnosis. Near the end of the 19th century, The psychologist Sigmond Freud started experimenting with hypnosis as a means to speed up his psychoanalysis theory, many were confused when he announced he felt it had little value. He is reported saying in the latter part of his life, had he understood the value of hypnosis in his earlier career, as he did coming to the end of his career, he wouldn't have stopped using it. In the middle of the last century Doctor Milton Erickson created a type of hypnosis which has improved the results of many modern hypnotists - it has become known as Indirect Hypnosis. can be used with clients that has previously failed to undergo hypnosis. Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, also a huge influence on hypnosis in that period, used a much more direct approach compared to Psychologist Milton Erickson. Ormond McGill, was referred to as "The Dean”, author of "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis” and less well known for his rapid therapy, in which he excelled. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond McGill passed away in 2005. Considered by many to be the most respected hypnotist of our time, Gil Boyne was buried in 2010. Gill was known for his marvellous work in the field of hypno-analysis, and expanded the approaches developed by Stage hypnotist Dave Elman a great deal. He wrote the still referenced 'Transforming Therapies' which in 2014 has yet to be bettered in the field of theraputic analysis.
