Are you aware of how powerful a tool you could have in your speaking voice? Think about those voices which make you stop and listen. When you hear the likes of Diane Sawyer, James Earl Jones, Kathleen Turner, George Clooney, Morgan Freeman, and Felicia Rashad, you are drawn to listen. These voices grab your attention because they have depth and breadth – they are warm, rich, deep, and resonant. What is remarkable about your own speaking voice is that it is just as individual to you as are your fingerprints. While two voices may be very similar, they are not exactly the same. What is also remarkable is that you have a better voice inside of you. And, it may be as good as – or even better – than the voices of those actors mentioned above. Through the years that I’ve been involved in voice training, I have heard not only wonderfully dynamic sounds coming from my clients which they did not know they had, but I’ve also heard the remarks my clients have made after discovering those richer, warmer, more mature qualities. What they realize is that their voice is a powerful tool which can give them the leading edge. Imagine that you are one of two candidates for a job or a promotion. Both of you possess similar education, similar experience, and even a similar outgoing personality. The other candidate, however, has a fantastic speaking voice. Given that scenario, it is more than likely that the other candidate will get the job. You, on the other hand, may be soft-spoken or have a heavy accent in which others constantly ask you to repeat yourself. Or perhaps you are too loud. Maybe your voice is high-pitched, or shrill, or nasal. It could be that you are over 21 and sound like a pre-teen. Or it might be that you talk in a monotone, displaying no emotion, no life, no color when you express yourself. Everything we use in business is a tool in some fashion. Even our visual image is a tool. You may score a 10 in that department. If your voice, however, is a 2, what is it saying about you? (Please note that I’m talking about the voice you hear on your voicemail, not the one you hear in your head!) If you can appreciate that your speaking voice may be working against you, then it is time to make the change. You have a better voice inside of you and it is one heck of a powerful tool!
