Antioxidants: Antioxidant Drinks Ever since the health benefits of antioxidants have been made known to the public by numerous health researchers and scientists, people have explored numerous antioxidant supplements and even antioxidant drinks. One of the most popular questions asked by consumers is; what is the best or most effective way of taking them? This raises the question, what is the most effective way for the human body to absorb antioxidants, in order to produce the desired results and health benefits. Just because a particular food product or supplement is packed with nutrients and vitamins offering numerous health benefits, does not mean that the human body effectively absorbs it. It is very common for many consumers to consume foods or products containing healthy vitamins and nutrients, yet often time those nutrients can be quickly expelled through urine, sweat, bowels, and other methods of human excretion without actually being absorbed by the digestive system. This is why antioxidant drinks have become so popular lately. The human body has a significantly easier time absorbing something in liquid form as opposed to something in solid form. With something liquid like a drink, a person's digestive system does not need to work nearly as hard to break down solid particles (which you would have with food, or pill supplements) to extract the necessary nutrients and vitamins. Therefore when antioxidants are absorbed in liquid form, they are immediately extracted, absorbed, and released into the blood stream. Scientific studies have proven that only around 30% of what is ingested in solid or pill form is actually absorbed by the body. Whereas in liquid form the body is able to absorb around 90% of what is being ingested. Furthermore, an antioxidant drink can be more much more appetizing to most people as it offers an alternative to having to take any kind of pill supplement or having to consume a huge amount of berries or fruits just to get the same amount of antioxidants. When examining different antioxidant drinks, it is important to remember that the more antioxidant rich fruits that are in the drink, the higher the antioxidant content of the drink. It is also important to keep in mind that certain fruits like mangosteen or acai berries have a much higher concentration of antioxidants than others. This results in a much higher ORAC, or Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity. The ORAC is a scale, which measures the concentration of antioxidants present in a particular item. Therefore it is important for a consumer to understand that not all antioxidant drinks are equal in their ORAC value. One antioxidant drink might not be as rich in antioxidants as another drink. It boils down to the fruit’s concentration of antioxidants and the amount of actual fruit used in the drink itself. There is an abundance of antioxidants present in both fruits and vegetables, therefore it can be pretty easy for a manufacturer to claim their product has antioxidant properties.
