Maybe you have clicked on a comical video or got redirected to a site and found it simply would not work. You could have got a clean page or maybe a message saying that this site isn't obtainable in your state. The reason this is happening is something called geotargeting and basically means selecting what you can get based on your place. So for example, the technology is used by the search engines to ensure you get results tailored to your geographical area. In this scenario it's actually quite useful and helps steer your searches into the correct direction. In many situations though, geotargeting is really harmful. Web sites will use it to charge different costs to different places. In the USA some DIY shops will look up your location, subsequently bill you based on how far you're from a rival. It Is very common practice for firms to use something called priced discrimination to maximise their gains. Take for example a world-wide service like Netflix, if you logon from the UK you'll get something like half as many movies as those who logon to the American service. The technology behind this is actually rather easy. All that happens is that your IP address is logged when you connect to the site. Then that address is looked up in a big database to fit the address to a particular place. The website afterward will determine what you can access or what it charges based on where you dwell. This can get annoying, clearly being blocked or charged more just based on where you happen to be. However there's a way around these tests, a technique where you can control access to your location when you're online. The key is to relay your link through another server. Using proxies or VPNs in other nations you can select your virtual location. When your link is relayed through any of these servers, your actual IP address is concealed and only the proxies is visible. It's possible to set these up easily on computers, laptops, iPads and even mobile phones. Here's how you can free up your net connection on your own iPad.
