There are many professions where, if you don’t hold relevant qualifications, you can work your way up from the bottom and possibly even one day become the boss. There are also many professions where this will never be the case, where qualifications are vital and your career will be over even before it’s started if you don’t get the right qualification. Many of these jobs are obvious, it’s rare to be allowed to perform open heart surgery if you haven’t qualified as a surgeon. Likewise, the Royal Navy are unlikely to let you service the nuclear reactor in HMS Astute if you don’t have a Nuclear Engineering degree amongst numerous other qualifications. Becoming a gym instructor, whilst not quite in the same league as those examples, is a similar story. If you want to become a gym instructor you need to have completed a level 2 gym instructor course. It’s not just a matter of knowing your way round a gym and how to use the equipment; you will need a wealth of knowledge and experience and it will take time and effort in order to achieve it. Not only will you need to understand exercise and how to get the most out of your workout, you will also need a good understanding of health and safety, nutrition and have excellent communication skills as well. A level 2 gym instructor will usually be asked about nutrition as well as exercise, because whether you’re looking to tone up, lose weight or to win Mr Universe, the two go hand in hand. If you exercise lots but still eat poorly you won’t see the result you want, and dieting without exercise doesn’t work much better. It’s all a fine balance which you’ll need to get to grips with in order to help your client’s achieve their goals. Most level 2 gym instructor courses will lead to contracted work in a gym or freelance work. You can increase your training levels and your pay packet by following your first course with the level three fitness instructor qualification. This will allow you to work as a personal trainer, and your previous work in a gym instructor role will really help you get the most out of this and advance your career quickly. Completing a level 2 gym instructor course is extremely rewarding if it’s what you’re passionate about. If you’re a people person who wants a bit more freedom about how you work, and want to do something a bit more active, completing a level 2 gym instructor course could be the perfect move.
