How to Remove Write Protection from a SanDisk Flash Drive

SanDisk manufactures many types of removable storage devices, including memory cards and universal serial bus (USB) flash drives. USB flash drives function like an external hard drive and connect to your computer's USB port; however, they often have significantly lower storage capacities. USB flash drives can be write-protected, but the write protection is often digital, rather than a physical switch on the drive. To turn off the write protection, you must edit your computer's registry.

Instructions Back Up the Registry

1 Remove the USB flash drive from the computer. Open the "Start" menu (click the Windows-logo button on the lower-left-hand corner of the screen) and type "Regedit." Click "Regedit" from the search results to open the registry.

2 Click "File" from within the registry, then click "Export."

3.Set the "Export Range" to "All" and then click "Export." Name the file "SNDK.reg."

Remove Write Protection 4 Click the "+" beside the entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" on the left side of the registry window.

5 Double-click the following, in this order: "SYSTEM," "CurrentControlSet," "Control" and "StorageDevicePolicies."

6 Right-click "WriteProtect" from the right side of the registry window. Click "Modify."

7 Enter "0" in the "Value Data" field and then click "OK."
