I have recently been asked how I feel about people doing secret job searches and as a recruiter, how would I work with those people. There are a number of organizations that create “Blind Want Ads” because they do not want their employees to know that they are looking for key staff replacements or because they are about to reorganize the company and will be having layoffs. These ads do not give employer names and usually are vague about job titles. So based on this, I don’t think that it is wrong for employees to secretly do a job search. As a recruiter, I do not have a problem sourcing this type of candidate. I would, however, want to know all their details (name, Company, etc) before I would present their resume to the employer. Some people just want to “see what is out there” and don’t want management to know what they are doing. On the other hand, due to politics, being passed over, being overworked and a number of other reasons, it is easy to understand why employees get disgruntled and just want out. They may be tired of asking for salary increases that never come or just disgusted with the lack of communication in their organization. In this age of communications and the internet, it is very easy for an employer to see if someone on staff has their resume posted somewhere. There are also some managers out there who would fire their staff immediately if they found out that they were looking elsewhere. So the concept of secretly looking for a job for some people is very practical. It should be noted that some recruiters and hiring managers may not respond to a blind resume because they think you are trying to hide something serious. So how should you go about creating a blind resume? First of all you want to use a phony first name only. Go to Gmail and create a new email account for this purpose only! Do not put an address or phone number, only use the Gmail for initial contact information. It is probably okay to put your city and state on the blind resume. Do not put the names of your current company or the preceding that you worked for. Be sure to check your new email everyday so you can promptly reply to anyone interested. If you have a good phone interview and know the name of the company looking for staff, you can then send the recruiter or hiring manager your complete resume with all the missing information filled in. Remember, companies post blind want ads so there is nothing wrong with you sending out blind resumes.
