As the economy slowly starts to grow, companies will increase their staffing. But today, staffing attributes are very different than in the booming growth years. The following are eight attributes that interest employers more than ever before. These are called “Job Readiness” and are at the top of the recruiting list for many growing organizations. So, what attributes do employers want new employees to have BEFORE they come aboard? Key attribute number one …The ability to observe, listen and absorb. Graduates sometimes feel they know everything, but employers need them to be able to absorb all the information they can. They can do this through listening, reading, asking questions and taking notes on everything. Key attribute number two …To be aware of gossip but not to participate. While it is important to be aware of the corporate grapevine, the new employee should not contribute so as to avoid a negative reputation. Key attribute number three… To be Professional – Workers should always be courteous, mindful of their manners, and avoid foul language, off-color jokes or stories. While staff should strive to work well with others, it is sometimes not always possible. If the employee is unable to get along with a co-worker, it is necessary they find an acceptable way to disassociate themselves with that person. Key attribute number four… To appreciate and understand individual responsibility. It is important that a new employee understand their responsibilities and to maintain quality work in a timely manner. It is important they know when to ask for assistance if uncertain about a task or deadline. Key attribute number five … The ability to maintain a positive attitude. Management will quickly lose respect for workers who are always complaining or arguing with corporate decisions. This type of employee will earn a poor reputation. Staff who always show a positive attitude will be looked on as winners! Key Attribute number six … Know when to ask for feedback and how to accept criticism. Management expects the new employee to ask for feedback if uncertain about any aspect of their job function. Additionally, workers should know how to accept and use criticism. It is difficult to be criticized, but a good staff member will use critical feedback as a learning experience to perform their function more efficiently. Key Attribute number seven… To be flexible and to expect and accept changes Corporate America is all about change, lots of change! Management expects staff to accept all the changes, grow, and move on! Key Attribute number eight… Maintain a high level of ethics. It was once said that “Honesty should never be an option.” To avoid misunderstandings, management needs an open and honest channel of communication from the shop floor to corporate. Organizations know that it is important to hire people that have the experience and talent needed to do the job, but they are now demanding that workers also have these job readiness attributes in order to become a noteworthy employee.
