The couple met behind bars in 2006 when he was serving time fordrug offences. At first they were just friends and then, in theconfines of the notorious jail, became lovers. Now released, Panangian, who rents out surfboards to tourists, visits every day, spending hours with her in the public visitingarea where they are regularly seen cuddling. He was reportedly by Corby's side on Tuesday when she was given thenews she could taste freedom this year after being granted clemencyby Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Pictures: Corby through her years in prison She will today be given an official release date when prison chiefGusti Ngurah Wiratna meets with the convicted drug smuggler. "She's fine, doing well," Mr Wiratna said. "I will announce (the release date) after I've seen theclemency letter." Panangian, who uses his more formal name Bernard on Corby'svisitors list, has become such a pillar of strength to her that, when he was transferred to nearby Bangli prison, she washospitalised with depression. Usually reluctant to speak to the media, he told New Idea in 2009:"When I visit she always asks me to give her a big hug becauseaffection is something she craves and misses.
"I'm scared she thinks she cannot survive and says her life isnot worth living. She's only holding on for her family." Kerobokan guards yesterday said Corby remained happy and keptsaying: "Today is a good day." She had painted her toenails, they said, and accepted someMcDonald's for lunch from a visitor. Her family and legal team are now focussing on the next stage inher bid for parole. A senior prison official has calculated therelease date which, based on the almost two years in remissions shehas already received on top of this week's five-year cut, shows shehas another five years to serve. That could be reduced further, and possibly end in 2015, if the34-year-old is granted the maximum eight months in remissions overthe next two to three years.
She could, however, taste freedom even sooner if she is approvedfor an Indonesian prison program of "asimilasi", orassimilation, designed to allow well-behaved inmates to reintegratewith society. Under the rules of the program, those convicted of drug offencesmust have served two thirds of their final sentence. If Corbyreceives the maximum remission in August, she will qualify for theprogram this year. Parole, during which she would need to live in Bali until theexpiration of her sentence and would work outside during the dayand return to custody at night, will take many months to beapproved.
Corby's lawyer Iskandar Nawing said he intended meeting the jail'sgovernor today to get more information about a possible releasedate. "On our calculation she has been serving two thirds from thetotal of her term and she is qualified to apply for parole. So fromthe beginning I have been focusing on parole, notassimilation," Mr Nawing said. One of the conditions of assimilation is the prisoner must have aletter of guarantee from their embassy or consulate stating thatthey will not try to escape and will obey all parole conditions. In order to qualify they must be of good behaviour, be taking partin rehabilitation programs and have served two thirds of theirsentence.
"I see her following the regulations in here, I don't see herdoing anything bad," Kerobokan head of security Wayan AgusMiarda, said. "She mingles with other inmates and communicates with theprison officers. There's no bad report on Corby so far." sAnd as the Corby family celebrated the five-year sentence cut, politicians from all sides and the anti-drugs lobby in Jakarta werecondemning the decision and the Indonesian President for making it. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has long held a staunchanti-drugs stance and many remain surprised that he has grantedclemency to Corby.
Former Justice Minister Yusril Mahendra said this was the firsttime that an Indonesian President had granted clemency to a drugconvict. He described the Corby decision as "weak" andanother politician said it was "regretful". TIMELINE - Schapelle Corby:.
