It is a simple story; one brings in flowers to bring in joy and to emulate the beauty of nature in the confines of the home. If there is a sad story of chemical sprays and exploited workers behind your flowers, the joy of the flowers is diminished. There are many other great reasons to choose organic—less dangerous chemicals in the environment, more farm acreage managed in a way that builds and enriches valuable soils, and conservation of water. But for us it's more than all that scientific rational stuff, it's a celebration of everything beautiful, natural, and healthy. Flowers are our way of celebrating nature, and celebrating ourselves, so they just have to be grown in a way that cares for the environment or it defeats their whole purpose. The Farm Ecosystem organic flower field There are many ways to manage organic flowers; we believe it is more than just using safer potions to grow crops. We believe in a farm that is a balanced and harmonious ecosystem. Healthy plants, like healthy people, are better able to fight off disease and insects. Plant health begins with soil that is well cared for and nourished. Our main source of soil fertility is legume cover crops, which provide nitrogen, micronutrients and organic matter. A plant that is able to feed itself from rich balanced soil builds strong cell walls that are able to repel insects. Secondly, the cover crops provide habitat for beneficial insects, which keep populations of pests very low. We have built up such a strong population of beneficial that aphid infestations are now met with a strong counter attack of ladybugs and green lace wings. Sometimes we can count hundreds of ladybugs on one plant. Our farm is a healthy, happy ecosystem filled with hummingbirds, dragonflies, blue birds (we have boxes to attract these voracious and beautiful caterpillar predators), toads, snakes, predatory wasps, and many more. What does this mean for your flowers? Well, since our flowers are field grown from strong healthy plants, our flowers are also strong and vibrant with rich green foliage and bright brilliant blooms. Just as a garden tomato will always have better flavor than a hothouse tomato, so too will our 'free range' flowers have superior vibrancy and vitality! Harvesting organic flowers We are a small family farm with a handful of committed, hardworking employees. Our farm is led by trained professionals to harvest your flowers at their peak freshness. The summers are hot here so we try to get all the flowers in for processing before noon. Each harvest day we have a relaxing lunch and hot tea before starting the afternoon work of packing boxes for shipment. We believe in hard work and celebration, in enjoying our strength and honoring our weaknesses. Our employees are part of our family and we are thankful everyday for their contribution. Organic Flowers on a Mission! A seed is planted. Carefully placed in the soil, lovingly watered and weeded, pruned and supported, a flower grows. Each flower on our farm is raised from youth to be ready at a moment’s notice for an important emotional mission. They proudly wait to be selected and packed into a box with a message of love, or hope or grief or joy. Organic flowers are sent to people we love, because we wish to express joy for their new job, house, or baby. They are sent to show we care about their sickness, injury or loss of loved one. Flowers are sent to encourage a friend to carry on in times of turmoil and they are sent just because we remember how important that person is to us and we just want them to know that we think of them from time to time.
