Comparative running costs of Electric and Gas Cookers

The decision you make weather to purchase a as or electric cooker will likely be depend on not only your personal cooking preferences but it is also likely that you will previous experience with cookers into account.

There are however significant differences in the cost of running each type of cooker. Granted if you use an electric cooker you will use less units than if you were using gas, however a unit of gas is cheaper than a unit of electricity, so in the long run an electric cooker will cost you more.

The cost of using your gas cooker’s over, grill and hob for about an hour and twenty minutes every day per year, a gas cooker will cost you £16.

However an electric cooker will cost you £53 a year to run. Therefore gas cookers give you an average saving of £37 per year which is a saving of £222 over the cooker’s lifetime.

Pros and Cons: Electric Vs Gas Cookers

Gas Cooker Pros:

Gas Hobs – These offer heat instantaneously and the flames touching and spreading round the bottom of your pans means the heat is evenly distributed across the hob ring. Cost – As already shown gas is cheaper than electricity so you are going to save yourself some money with a gas cooker.

Gas Cooker Cons:

Uneven oven temperature – Gas cookers usually don’t have fans in their ovens which mean that the heat isn’t easy to circulate, meaning the oven is usually hotter at the top and slightly cooler at the bottom. Installation – Gas cookers must be installed by GasSafe registered engineers.

Electric Cooker Pros:

Even oven temperature – With electric cookers you have more control over the temperature of the oven as most have fans in them to distribute the heat around every part of the oven. Multi-function ovens – In an electric multi-oven you are able to cook with a variety of heat from the top and bottom oven but also use the grill and fan. Easy to clean hobs – The ceramic hobs on an electric cooker are certainly easier to wipe clean than the metal risers and hobs you find on a gas cooker. Electric Cooker Cons:

Cost – Electricity is more expensive than gas which means an electric cooker will cost you more to run. Slow Hobs – If you are using a pan that is larger than the ring on the hob, the pan will take longer to heat up than it would with gas.
