Applying to graduate school is a time consuming and tedious process. Although you may want to celebrate recently receiving your undergraduate degree, now you must stress over the elongated application process that goes along with obtaining a master’s degree. Nothing can eliminate filling out multiple applications for graduate school, but the process can be made easier. Julie Trimarco is a leading speech-language pathologist from Texas who has an extensive academic background. While pursuing her undergraduate degree at Bloomsburg University, Julie Trimarco helped develop a mentoring program that assisted students with the grad school application process. Julie Trimarco is aware of the difficulties that go along with completing the applications, and here she offers useful insight on the step-by-step process that goes along with applying. - Plan ahead. Julie Trimarco notes that students should start planning about two years in advance. Although this may seem unrealistic, it will make the application process much more manageable as the deadlines are approaching. Julie Trimarco recommends making a file that includes your research on different programs so you can easily eliminate them down in the future. It is really never too early to plan ahead for your future.
- Prepare. Julie Trimarco states that students should research different academic programs before even considering applying. Graduate school is a substantial investment, and unlike undergraduate, you should be completely certain that it is what you want to do for a career. During this time, Julie Trimarco recommends identifying major deadlines that you will have to meet, practicing for standardized tests like the GRE, and selecting professors who you will want as references. This should all be done approximately a year in advance.
- 3 months out. Julie Trimarco believes that students should prepare a statement of purpose that includes their reasoning for graduate study three months in advance. Julie Trimarco notes that your statement should include your background and future career goals. Schools will want different things included in your statement, so it is important to check with each program’s admissions coordinator. This should also be the time when you contact your references to ensure that letters are completed and mailed out before the deadline.
- 2 weeks out. Julie Trimarco notes that students will have to mail their official transcripts in advance in order to meet application deadlines, so it should be done approximately two weeks in advance. Julie Trimarco states that if you are an international applicant, you will need more time for your transcript to reach the school.
