Business Intelligence for Proper Healthcare Management

Science & Technology
With advancing technologies and new innovations, healthcare industry has multiplied by leaps and bounds. In recent times, the quality of healthcare has been progressing based on some medical advancement and a lot of research and analysis of the existing data. In such context, BI for healthcare or in other words business intelligence related to healthcare management has turned up as one of the most significant segments to study and follow.

Business Intelligence: An Overview
To study further about the concerned topic, one must be aware of the term "Business Intelligence". Simply put, business intelligence refers to the various technologies, researches, practices and applications being conducted for the collection, analysis and presentation of the business information related to any field of study. The sole purpose behind developing such a concept is to facilitate better decision-making in any sort of business.

Business Intelligence (BI) and Healthcare
When we talk about BI for healthcare, it definitely implies the proper use of available resources to maintain and develop the health of the human race. And, quality can only be achieved by adapting to accurate standards and methods. As convenient as it may sound, the reality states otherwise. Knowing the right thing to do may often become challenging to the negligent ones. It is true that with the evolution of science, medicine and healthcare has become comparatively easier than before. However, it is also true that with hectic and stressed lifestyles, the probability of sickness has also increased.

The Challenges for Healthcare Organizations
With more and more names joining the medical industry, patient care has unfailingly been the top most priority and thus all our studies related to BI for healthcare essentially revolve around the patients and their care and comfort. New discoveries are being made and lots of information is being passed to the researchers. However, this often leads to confusion and redundancy amongst researchers. Thus, it is imperative that they do not waste time on searching the data when the time requires them to act promptly and to the best of their knowledge. Another significant hurdle for most healthcare organizations is the accessibility of medical data. Most of these data is kept locked away in files, spreadsheets and computer databases which leaves very little room for accessibility and hence proves as a block in a research process.

The Business Intelligence Solution
With every problem, there is most likely a solution. And, with the healthcare industry, the adaptation of business intelligence provides just that. Business Intelligence methods provide past, current, and futuristic views of business operations, very often using data that has been stored into a data warehouse and rarely working from operational data. BI for healthcare organizations assures to enhance patient care by focusing on better decision making throughout the healthcare organization. When the insights into medical data are accurate, informed, and complete, medical decisions are bound to be based on available evidence. As mentioned before, the data in healthcare systems is scattered over various forms like paper files, databases, spreadsheets. BI is designed to extract data from all such resources and accumulate it into a centralized repository which is not only strictly safe and confidential but also conveniently available for healthcare organizations to access and increase their knowledge and decision-making capabilities.

The measuring standards of Healthcare Organizations
As per a report published over a decade ago, a healthcare organization has to have certain qualities to be able to get accredited as an organization aimed at premium patient care. To be precise, there are six such parameters namely being patient-centric, ensuring timeliness, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and patient safety. All these parameters are self-defined and specifically aimed at providing optimum patient care and address all their medical needs in a timely and effective manner. Equity and efficiency are equally important as they imply that no patient can be treated differently or with less care due to any demographic differences and at the same time the supplies, equipment, ideas and energy of a healthcare unit must be utilized with optimum outcome and least wastage. In short, it won't be unfair to say that with existence of business intelligence, medical healthcare industry has been exposed to the unlimited possibilities of a bright future. The quality of medical care will only be ever increasing and BI is one of the best ways to meet and overcome these challenges.
