Since the spread of Buddhism from the Indian sub-continent over two thousand five hundred years ago, Buddhist relics and Buddhist temples of worship can be visibly seen across South Asia and certain Asia Pacific countries. Having originated in India, Buddhism spread to Sri Lanka as well and at present, this isle is home to a predominant population of Buddhists and the celebration of the Buddhist faith is tangibly seen across this resplendent island. While the Sri Dalada Maligawa, formally known as the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura are among the most revered places of worship in this island nation, other iconic temples such as the Somawathi Chaitya and the Kelaniya Temple are frequented by many as well. The Kelaniya Temple also known by the local vernacular as the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara is believed to have been visited by the Lord Buddha. Historical records indicate that the stupa was built with a gem studded throne, upon which the Buddha sat and preached, is enshrined within it. There are also a number of intriguing artwork within the temple which detail the life of the Lord Buddha and illustrate numerous 'jataka katha' (religious tales) while the temple is also home to an eighteen foot Buddha statue. The Chief Priest of the temple, at present, is Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera who is also responsible for ensuring that the Duruthu Maha Perahera, an elaborate procession organised in the month of January, is conducted smoothly. An ideal way to explore the island is to reside in one location, perhaps a Sri Lanka spa resort and make excursions to places of interest. Likewise, those residing at a Negombo resort could easily make an excursion to Colombo and hotels such as the Jetwing Lagoon will conveniently arrange transport in such an instance. When in Colombo, the Kelaniya Temple is definitely a feature you would not want to miss when on a sightseeing tour.
