One of the great boating success stories to come out of the world oil crisis of the 1970s was the fiberglass Diltacraft Islander. This fiberglass launch broke from the mould of fast runabouts and proved that slow really make boaties happy on the water. This diesel-powered craft went on to become the most successful selling boat of its kind with some 675 boats sold. They Sydney factory on the Northern Beaches just keep pumping them out till it closed in the late 1980s. Now the Deltacraft is back. The original builder, Steve Leonard, is relaunching a new version of the boat that incorporates a number of improvements, including a moulded rear landing deck and walk through transom. The Deltacraft Islander is longer, and has more cabin headfroom which in turns means a larger shower compartment within the cabin. With a keel and shaft drive diesel the Deltacraft is well suited to in water mooring. Most existing boats are moored, however, this model will be trailerable thanks to the option of water ballast. The trail weight is expected to be around 1600kg, including the trailer. This is within the towing capacity of mid-sized 4WDs like the Nissan Pathfinder or cards like Ford Falcon. The new design provides a very comfortable cabin with Vee berth, toilet/shower, galley, dinette and stowage lockers. The cockpit can seat eight people and has a moulded fiberglass hardtop. There is a choice of either a full-length or short hardtop. An outboard open cockpit version is also being developed to suit the hire boat market. This model will be even more suited to trailing. Power of the standard boats comes froma 20hp Volvo Penta diesel that’s expected to give a speed around 6-7 knots with a very thrifty fuel consumption of 1.5 ltr per hour. This boat has full upholstery, lights, and will be ready to cruise. Resources: If you are looking to buy tackle products then you are in right place.
